Drilling and securing a fixing / screw very close to other holes in Brick

Thanks folks... Yes I appreciate minimum distances would depend on materials. The idea about plugging the existing hole and driving a countersunk screw in is a good idea... I ended up going 5cm above and 2cm to the right of the original hole and have since filled it. Hopefully it will be OK...

Drilling and securing a fixing / screw very close to other holes in Brick

Hi all, Today, I had a go at being a little practical / hands on myself and put up some Ben Simpson floating shelves... I had my Dad help me but I did make a fundamental error with the second shelf... I got the measurement 2cm out and ended up with 2 shelves that were not aligned with each...

Lifting of tiles near valley... Is that OK?

Thanks... shame it wasn't done this way in the first place!

Lifting of tiles near valley... Is that OK?

Thanks... Is this more of a cosmetic thing rather than a potential for water ingress?

Lifting of tiles near valley... Is that OK?

Hi, I was wondering if the way in which these tiles are sitting can be considered normal / OK? It is a house we have lived in for a year and I am certainly not a roof expert but I would expect them to lay flat. I know the bottom couple of courses of the valley needs re-pointing and it's on the...

    Boarding Loft Canvas Opinion

Thanks... My biggest concern was perhaps the sawdust being very easy to catch alight... Can always hover up the worst after but the dust may find it's way into other spaces. We have down lights with guards so unless dust gets behind those somehow should be fine.

    Boarding Loft Canvas Opinion

Hi Folks, Out of interest, if you were to board out your loft with joists and OSB boards, would you measure and cut everything inside or outside the loft. I've heard a few different views on this. It's more practical to cut boards / joists etc once in the loft space but of course this leaves...

    Replace drain channel block drive

Hi Folks, Might sound a bit strange but I am planning on replacing a section of drain channel on my block paved drive as it's snapped on the edge. I suspect something has hit it at some stage. Should these just pull up vertically? Do I run the risk of upsetting the block pavers around it...

    Lintel Outer Skin

Noted if we still live here when these windows are replaced... I'm assuming there would be no need to plan to install a lintel prior. I know there must be a lintel on the inner skin.

    Lintel Outer Skin

Thing is, the house clearly wasn't built wit them on the outer skin (they are on the inner skin). Does this issue arise because the windows were originally timber framed?

    Lintel Outer Skin

I'm guessing that whilst windows remain in place, there shouldn't be any imminent need to take action besides some cosmetic re-pointing? I was just canvasing folks opinions really.

    Lintel Outer Skin

Hi all, We purchased our house last year and I have some questions relating to lintels or rather the lack of in the outer skin. I know the house must have them on the inside as the chap fitting our blinds upstairs destroyed several drill bits getting into them. On the lounge window, there is...

    Skirting Board Slightly Loose

Hi, I have a portion of long skirting board that is ever so slightly loose in the middle (cracked the caulking and pushing it closed the crack). I'm sure some folks would say just leave it and fill with more caulking, it moves like 1mm if I push in the middle to close that tiny crack. I...

Window Sill Raised Round Parts / Fixings

Hi Folks, Probably a laughable question to those in the know. On a house we purchased last year, having come to decorate some of the rooms, i've noticed some of the interior window sills have these round things intruding the wooden sill. I am guessing these are one of two things, either a...

Door Hinges Black Tar Like Stuff

OK, thanks... That makes sense. I got the idea of soaking them in thinners as a decorator told me he used to do this to get rid of old paint :)

Door Hinges Black Tar Like Stuff

Hi, A number of hinges in my house have this horrible sticky black stuff coming out of them... I'm tempted to remove them and soak in white spirit etc. to get rid of it. However, I presume this is some kind of lubricant and may run into problems when re-fitting. Any ideas? Cheers...

Egg like things in loft... Any idea what they are from?

Thanks... There were no wasps around in the loft apart from a dead one on the floor (it's boarded). We did have two bee's nests in the loft earlier this year and these were treated, I heard those but in different places. How will I know if they are still inhabited.
