Query about insulating a suspended floor

Thanks Mr Chibs! Did you have the same issue as me, with the DPC being below the top of the joists?

Query about insulating a suspended floor

Thanks. Have already purchased the 90mm Xtratherm... so am kind of committed to using it! It will be supported by treated battens fixed to the joists. I want to avoid any draughts coming up from the cavity below the floor, which is currently well ventilated by airbricks. But is butting the...

Query about insulating a suspended floor

Yes, I'm OK with the airbrick issue. It was the fact that the insulation might effectively be bridging the DPC that worries me. ie. If the insulation is butted up to the wall below the DPC, possibly against the edge of the DPC in places, then it would technically be bridging the DPC, but could...

Query about insulating a suspended floor

Hi, I'm insulating my old workshop (timber frame, walls sit on brick & concrete block walls), and am currently about to start insulating the suspended floor. Have taken out the old chipboard flooring to expose the joists. The plan is to cut 90mm Xtratherm insulation boards to fit between the...

    Outbuilding insulation - breather membrane?

OK... so not breathable too, I'm guessing.

    Outbuilding insulation - breather membrane?

Have posted on here about this project before and got some good advice. Now just need to check something. I am insulating a garden building, for all year round use as a studio. Currently the walls comprise (from outside in) - T&G timber cladding, a black membrane, some thin polystyrene...

    Insulating studio/workshop roof

Ah, sorry, thought I'd posted in "Your projects" - I'll investigate and move the post! Thanks. Did wonder why there were no responses! OK, so ventilation gap and vapour barrier needed. Thank you.

    Insulating studio/workshop roof

Hi, I'm renovating what is actually quite a substantial outbuilding (used to be a bookbinder's studio). It has no insulation yet. The roof is pitched, and I want to fit insulation between the rafters before attaching plasterboard to them. My question is: do I need to leave a ventilation gap...

Can't see the joints I'm afraid.

    Insulating an outbuilding

OK, found a scrap of the sarking / membrane / whatever it is! Photos of both sides below. One side is smooth-ish and the other is gritty, like sandpaper. This has been fitted inside the timber cladding. Also managed to establish that the shed was built between 20 and 27 years ago. So my...

    Insulating an outbuilding

I don't think I can take a photo of it - as it is inside the walls! I only saw it the once, when I was replacing the rotten boards mentioned in the previous post. And I can't really remember it very well. But might go out there now just to check and see if I can see any at all.... I seem to...

    Insulating an outbuilding

Thanks JohnD. Actually behind the cladding there IS a layer of roofing membrane (the sarking type membrane I mentioned in the opening post) which completely keeps out rain, etc. I had assumed it was not breathable. But if it is, then that's good - no need for a ventilation gap? Yes, sloping...

    Insulating an outbuilding

Thanks Woody. Am now inclining towards rockwool. It may not be as effective as celotex but it's got to be better than the current thin sheets of polystyrene, I'm guessing.

    Insulating an outbuilding

OK, thanks. Sounds like a lot of Celotex! And it's quite a big building.... Don't think I can afford to do it that way, to be honest. Might have to use rockwool... In which case, what is the best way to ensure the ventilation gap behind the rockwool? Maybe I'm overthinking all this, as usual -...

    Insulating an outbuilding

Is it OK to just tape the Celotex joints, instead of covering the whole lot with a vapour barrier? And do I need to leave a ventilation gap behind the Celotex? (I think the sarking membrane stuff inside the timber exterior is probably meant to be waterproof so probably not breathable?) Thanks!

    Insulating an outbuilding

Thanks Noseall! "Yes" is probably the answer to all those questions... I guess I really wanted to check that I wasn't missing something, ie. another solution that I hadn't thought of. I may have a grasp, but not much experience! Also, definitely not a deep wallet, so cost is an issue. Just...

    Insulating an outbuilding

Hi all, during this enforced period of staying at home I am looking to make our garden outbuilding/studio/workshop more habitable during colder months. It's a substantial and solid building, tongue and groove exterior walls, slate gable roof, plasterboard interior walls fitted to studwork. The...

    Amtico & Karndean versus B&Q...?

Thanks. Actually since posting my message I have already started to go off the B&Q LVT. I have a box of it here, along with a big sample of Amtico. Have just done a "slip test" (tried sliding on both samples, in socks!). The B&Q stuff is far more slippery than the other two. Might have a look at...
