    3 phase distribution question

Hi all. Sorry, I stopped getting notifications for new posts to this topic for some reason. Thanks for the additional contributions. If I can ask a semi-related question for the same project - downstream of the 3 phase distribution I have the supplies running to the two separate houses. These...

    3 phase distribution question

Yes, that’s the intention. The two houses are my parents and my family in a farm and barn and the arrangement is such that a chunk of what’s metered on one house is for the benefit of both anyway so they might as well be blended. I don’t foresee the two being sold separately for several decades.

    3 phase distribution question

Yeah, that's a good idea. TBH it probably doesn't make any difference at this stage (can't afford to do any of the fancy stuff yet) but I guess I'll know whether to plan around doing it in future. Many thanks to all of you for the quick input.

    3 phase distribution question

That's so simple it hadn't even occurred to me that might be OK. So that sounds like this: Given that my heat pump (etc) requirements are purely future planning at this stage, presumably all I really need to do is make sure there is an isolation switch so so that the electrician can work on...

    3 phase distribution question

Thankyou for the quick reply, John. No, it's possible he doesn't fully get it. We tend to have most our discussion verbally on the hoof and while I have no doubt about his practical skills this project is perhaps outside completely standard domestic stuff. Just to be clear, he is a fully...

    3 phase distribution question

Hi all, I am in the process of doing some once-in-a-generation changes to a property and I've got something I'd like to achieve but I don't know if it's feasible. The property is large and consists of two separate houses shared by members of the same family. There's also some fairly large...

Shower panels - can they go direct on to studs?

Hi, I'm currently in the easy phase of repairing a shower that had leaked behind the tiles (the phase where I sit and wait for everything to dry out), and I'm trying to decide what to do next. The previous tiles had normal hardwood plywood behind them and it was all heavily water damaged and...

    Cleaning old tiles for reuse

With these panel systems, if you use the sealing strip at the bottom where the panel meets the tray, what do you do at the point where you meet the shower screen? On a tiled shower the tiles/grout and bead of sealant between tiles and tray runs all the way behind the U section that connects the...

    Cleaning old tiles for reuse

They look really good. Which panel product did you go for?

    Cleaning old tiles for reuse

That is an excellent idea that I hadn't thought of. I presume it doesn't look as nice as a well tiled shower but appearances are a long way second to 'never bloody leaking again' on my priority list.

    Cleaning old tiles for reuse

Yes, based on some internet research that’s what I’m planning. I’m just concentrating on cleaning the damaged material off at the moment so that whatever’s underneath can dry properly. Is aqua board the name for a type of plasterboard or is it a brand name?

    Cleaning old tiles for reuse

I started the easy job of removing old, cracked grout in our shower yesterday so that I could re grout. Unfortunately it turns out that there has been water getting behind those tiles for quite some time and some of the tiles came off revealing that the board underneath is completely shot...

Change of heating controller - wiring question

Hi, I could use some advice on how to convert my current heating system to the Wiser platform please. I currently have a combi boiler which provides both heating and hot water from its ‘heating’ circuit (the separate ‘hot water’ circuit is used to provide hot water to a part of the house not...

How do I get a fire escape removed?

That’s a good idea but unfortunately the access isn’t great. I’ve attached some photos below. You could get a scaffold tower in next to it, but just dropping it in place or lifting it out isn’t a viable option. Thanks for all the ideas though!

How do I get a fire escape removed?

Procedural/regulatory stuff is all under control, as is the making good of the building (ultimately there will be a balcony installed in place of the fire escape), I just literally need to find someone to get shot of the current staircase. Incidentally, we call it a fire escape because visually...

How do I get a fire escape removed?

Hi all. I've got an old farmhouse with an exterior steel staircase that I want removed. The staircase is all painted steel with a couple of square tube section legs bolted to the floor and at the top it's got a couple of supports cemented in to the stonework. I am tempted to try and remove it...

    DNO magic words

Thanks. That's more or less what I think I'm going to get a quote for. We've got a listed house though, so it'll have to move to an outbuilding rather than a wall box, but I believe that is feasible provided we allow for an additional safety device to protect the (well over 3m) tails. I notice...

    DNO magic words

Hmm. Well, I was until you asked about it :cautious:. The cable in question is visible in graphic 5 and 12 in my attachments. It certainly looks like there is a metal shielding that has been used for the mechanical anchoring of the cable. Whether the shield is electrically earthed is a good...

    DNO magic words

Hi, I have a minor renovation coming up during which I want to make a few changes to my electricity supply, either to tidy the place up or to future proof it while I've got things dug up etc. Our current installation is old but not 'oh god don't touch that' old. I wanted to describe it to you...
