Maybe that's why they're there ! Gee that's just the sort of answer frequently found here. Unless it's two responders trading 'building regulation blows'

    Roofing

Thanks John. There is insulation on the floor. I have a problem with cluster flies getting in where the insulation has fallen. I've used smoke diggers to kill them during the evening last week. But I've a problem I've just noticed with bats. Lots of droppings which I'm about to remove. I...

    Roofing

I have fibre glass insulation that keeps falling down from between the roof rafters. It's a big roof. I want to staple a plastic vapour barrier over the top to prevent it falling. My question is: Should it be a vapour barrier. Or a permeable plastic covering.

    Strange arrangement

Appreciated Yes, the terminology sometimes leaves amateurs like me frequently frustrated but in this case chicken wire is just that. Having seen where bits of the glass fibre insulation has fallen down. I notice that there is no felt/membrane under the slates. (Which are in good general...

    Strange arrangement

Thank you for your interesting comments. I'll do just that and remove the glass fibre material between the rafters and use Celotex between. Tips for safe removal will be welcome. I obtained a long length of vacuum cleaner hose 15M. And plan to leave the vac down below to avoid air disturbance...

    Strange arrangement

I'd particularly like views on how to approach adding the insulation to the rafters. Type of insulation to add or whether to remove the glass fibre stuff. How to fix the new insulation etc etc The practical side really

    Strange arrangement

The floor of the loft of my house consists of the normal rafters across. Which have been stained & varnished to be seen from the bedrooms etc beneath. And the plasterboard has been laid on top of them and painted white. All very nice but not very practical. I want to revert to the normal...

Thanks for that advice. I'm not sure what they are that's down at present in that case. However I'd like to put tiles down again then.

    Garage floor

i want to put new ceramic tiles down on my garage floor, however I will also put some electric undertile heating pads. If I put the insulation that normally accompanies this, will it cause the tiles to crack once s vehicle is driven over. Does anyone recommend just tiling and heating pads...

    Under tile heating

I've laid this before but this time I would like to put it under the solid garage floor, and lay new tiles over. Does anyone know whether the undertile insulation will cause the tiles to crack, with the weight of a vehicle. Or whether I should lay it without. Thanks. Paul

Oak uprights to floor decayed at base

Not tried drilling into it yet. Weather has been non stop rain for weeks. I may be able to break away the concrete underneath one post from outside. It'll be tedious work but I could then be able to see more of what's required. Might be able to pack it out with more concrete. I can fit lead...

Oak uprights to floor decayed at base

The terrace to my house is supported by nine oak uprights approx 10" square and the same across the tops. It's about ten metres span. The roof is a sloping slate tile roof with t&g pine under. Between the oak uprights are large sliding anodised aluminium Windows. Frames of which are screwed to...

    Freezing oil feed pipe.

Thanks John. Your idea is a good one. I'll syphon it off into plastic containers. That'll probably pick up the worst stuff first. Then I'll do what you said, and let it settle for a couple of hours at least. Then do the valve and filter bowl and re-instate. Any idea where's best to buy the...
