Micro cracks visible in tiles after grouting

Any idea what has caused this or is it a fault with the tile? Tiles were from homebase What are the repair options.. remove tiles? color the grout that has filled the cracks. They weren't obvious when fitting just the white grout has highlighted them :(

    1890's joist concerns

Would ply be better than c16 timber. Is that a suitable alternative to splitting the span with a beam?. I did consider 3mm steel plate. Not sure how that would compare to ply.

    1890's joist concerns

Thin joist are actually 1.5" with a couple of 2.5" There has definitely been a wall removed at some point. Just visible in the picture the lath and plaster finishes and there is 150mm of plasterboard the lath and plaster starts again.. Old wall would have been ,1.8m into the 5m span..

    1890's joist concerns

Thanks illI check for that. One side is fine ill pull the boards up at the other. More for the sake of the joists. They are the shared walls so pretty well supported. Maybe I just get on with it and put a beam in. It feels like the right thing to do.. after getting someone that knows what...

    1890's joist concerns

I don't particularly want to get rid of the sag. It doesn't detract from the house. Everything it pretty wonkey!. It's only downstairs the ceilings are low. Upstairs rooms are 2.8m. My only concern is long term damage. I'm perfectly happy to leave it as is (probably add some noggins and maybe...

    1890's joist concerns

This thread is probably fairly useless without pictures so I will update it as soon as I can. but any immediate help would be appreciated My partner has just brought a 1890's built cottage and I am fairly concerned a supporting wall has been removed without any additional support. The joists...

    Vertical radiator top/bottom and flow?

I suppose so!. Just worried it would take ages to heat 1800mm rather than 600! It doesn't look like it has a right way up. it's completely symmetrical. There must be a reason why some are supplied baffled (and then do require fitting the right way up)

    Vertical radiator top/bottom and flow?

Woody (or anyone with a vertical radiator), did you fit this radiator, if so does it function OK? I've just had one delivered and I'm also surprised to see no baffle / block. I'm wondering weather to fit it as I wouldn't have expected it to work well vertically. Andy.

Cast lintel only over internal cavity wall on doorway

Annoyingly there is no way to tell if they bothered with wall ties now! (And going from how well the rest of the house is put together doesn't inspire confidence). No one else's has appeared to have fallen down however.. Although mine was one of the first built. I'll give it a once over with...

Cast lintel only over internal cavity wall on doorway

It looks as though the internal one has been cast up to the header bricks if that makes sense / makes any difference..

Cast lintel only over internal cavity wall on doorway

Hi all, Usual situation from reading other threads... wooden door frame coming out and UPVC one going in. Would you leave it as it (doesn't seem to have effected the many other houses on the street which look to be the same construction) or do I add an external skin lintel. If so what type as...

Fitting architrave when plaster is proud of door frame

As the title. Standered 45mm taper architrave, the plaster in some places is 2-3mm proud of the door frame/lining. (This is what the original architrave I have removed was fastened /bodged onto) Do I rebate the architrave over the plaster so I can get it to sit flush on the frame. (Will this...

Inline /Tee air admittance valve to prevent siphonage

I am just fitting my bathroom and have the bath and sink running off the same 40mm waste pipe. (Not possible to run the separately) The pipe runs Bath >> Sink >> Soil pipe. I have this bath waste / trap http://www.screwfix.com/p/mcalpine-bottle-bath-trap-white-40mm/21158 and I am worried...

Blocking or filling pre cast gas fire flue

Thanks Nige, I think I'll stuff some acoustic wool up it and seal both ends. Read a lot of damp horror stories but assuming these are from chimneys which have had a real fire in? Well remembered - Floor is sorted (after a lot of procrastinating.) It was no where near as daunting as I'd imagined...

Blocking or filling pre cast gas fire flue

Possibly a bit of an unusual question but the party wall in my semi has a pre cast gas fire flue built in. I have no intention or re-instating the gas fire. The joining property also has a flue directly opposite. This doesn't leave much solid material between the houses and it seems to be a...

extending brick wall with plaster board (and tiling advice)

It's a brick wall presumably provide some lateral support to the external wall? But not supporting anything above . I'd rather move it if safe to do so?. Here is a picture from the other side and you can see the step in the understair cupboard. It has the consumer unit on the wall but moving...
