    Random metal bar in wall

Thanks - that does make sense but it would be an odd place for a light fitting. The power points are on opposing walls left and right of shot. The wall (cavity brick) is external so nothing on other side. I believe this room used to be the kitchen and is now a dining room, so a removed power...

    Random metal bar in wall

Any ideas what this might be, before I hack at it? A thin skim of plaster fell off as I was taking off the wallpaper. It's iron or steel, about an inch wide with a bevelled edge, and runs from the ceiling as far as the round magnet I've left stuck to it in the photo. I've run the magnet over the...

    Crack stitching for internal crack?

Hi guys, I have a sub-5mm vertical crack on an inside wall, resulting from a botched window installation. It runs from the window opening to just shy of the floor. There is a crack in the outer leaf also, which I am getting stitched (in a different part of the wall but also window-related)...

    Wall tie corrosion

Thanks, that makes a lot of sense. There's no issue locally that I can see, no horizontal cracking anywhere. I suppose if they're not outright touting for business, it's at least a case of the old 'when you're a hammer, everything looks like a nail' thing.

    Wall tie corrosion

Thanks guys, I very much appreciate the replies. All of the cracks are vertical hairline or stepped c3mm wide - there's really no evidence of horizontal cracking suggestive of failure. I suppose the crux of it is - is there any sense in a pre-emptive replacement, given that I need the various...

    Wall tie corrosion

Thanks - we had a structural engineer in as well, and neither his report nor this company's actually linked the cracking to the ties; it was down to the drains in one case and poor conservatory and window installations in all other cases. The (wall tie-centric company that took that image)...

    Wall tie corrosion

Hi all. In looking at repairing cracks in our walls, a local company offered a free brick tie check, so I said yes. They attempted to inspect two ties on different walls but could only get a view on one due to cavity wall insulation. The one they borescoped is below; https://imgur.com/a/D1voWqU...

    Vertical cracks through bricks

Hi all, hope you can help. We have a 1950s semi with three cracks in the walls; one under the front room window, and two in the end wall; 1) A long vertical crack in the end wall, above and below the upstairs window, mostly following the mortar but has cracked through two bricks - pics...

    Loud thump from pipes

Hi guys, I have a weird noise issue in our new house (to us that is, it was built in the 1950s, central heating added early 80s I think?). It has a combi boiler downstairs (Semia Condens). If I run the hot water OR the heating for any length of time, what appears to be the pipes in the bedroom...
