    “Blocking up” timber frame outbuilding

Hi all, Quick one. I’ve just bought a property with a large outbuilding, a former stable with a timber frame and wood cladding. I’d like to use the building as a large office and studio. Rather than take the frame and roof down (which are in great condition) I am wondering if the cladding can...

    Picture Resolution Confusion!

Got to the bottom of it. Switching the laptop output to the projector only opened up the ability to increase resolution to 1080i which was an improvement on the 720p I was seeing when both laptop screen and projector were on. Because I knew the projector was 1080p capable and my film library...

    Picture Resolution Confusion!

Ah interesting, thanks! it’s an old laptop so 720p is the max selectable screen resolution I see in the Screen Resolution settings. That said, I haven’t tried outputting the image to the projector only (laptop screen off) which might then give me a 1080p option being as my projector is true...

    Picture Resolution Confusion!

Guys, got a question that’s probably dumb... I have a 720p max resolution laptop attached to a 1080p projector in our cinema. The laptop runs Kodi and I have a SSD with all my movies on. I’ve never given it much thought but it suddenly occurred to me today that if I play a 1080p movie on the...

Radiator valve with drain plug - What does it drain?!

Quick question before I drain a rad to take it off... I have a combined radiator valve and drain plug but I’m not sure what the drain off drains! If I close the valve to stop water entering the rad and I then open the drain off nut, does the water come out from the rad or does it come from the...

Which direction to lay flooring (with pic)?

That’s interesting regarding which way wood usually expands, I didn’t know that. There will indeed be an expansion gap around the perimeter hidden by skirting. Fantastic, looks like I can lay it the way I want!

Which direction to lay flooring (with pic)?

This is a ground floor concrete slab. It will have 80mm rigid insulation over the top and then 18mm tongue and groove chipboard. The engineered planks will float on top of the chipboard. No skirtings in place yet. The blue lines are indeed windows and the lines in the middle are a couple of steps.

Which direction to lay flooring (with pic)?

Yep, I’m with you, that’s what I’d prefer, just worried about a 12m run. Will wait for a flooring expert to share their thoughts.

Which direction to lay flooring (with pic)?

How’d you mean, left to right in diagram above? Should I be worried about a 12m run and expansion/contraction?

Which direction to lay flooring (with pic)?

Hi all, Which direction should I run my new engineered flooring (2.2m lengths 220mm wide)? I’m thinking from top to bottom of the image below? I would rather run left to right but that 12m is a very long span I would think? Any issue running the planks into the steps at a right angle and...

How to add a second subwoofer to 5.1 system...

Good shout. I’m no audiophile, what I’m content with I’m sure would be laughable to expert ears! For this reason I decided to fight the urge to go bigger and bigger and plumped for the Gemini II. If it doesn’t work out I’ll swap it for something bigger but as you say, it’s going to be head and...

How to add a second subwoofer to 5.1 system...

Thanks again @Lucid, I’m now sold on the idea of adding an active sub into the mix. If I understand correctly the Gemini II has high level inputs and I can connect it to my Onkyo 5.1 system in parallel with the existing passive sub? The next question then is do I go for the Gemini II or plump...

How to add a second subwoofer to 5.1 system...

Amazing info @Lucid thanks! So to give you full insight I had a spare Onkyo 5.1 system which I decided to use to give ceiling speakers. The standard speakers with the system were 6ohm. I spent some time looking at Polk ceiling speakers and after lots of back and forth life threw a curveball...

How to add a second subwoofer to 5.1 system...

Yep, exactly right. I’ve confused myself by reading some rubbish articles! They must be wired in series to ensure the impedance doesn’t drop too low for the amp.

How to add a second subwoofer to 5.1 system...

Hi all, After some great advice on here I have finally sorted out 10 ceiling speakers around the ground floor of my house using a spare Onkyo 5.1 surround sound system I had. I invested a lot of time in making MDF boxes for the speakers in the ceiling and was careful to select speakers and wire...

Column radiator flow and return wrong way around

Before fitting the rads it wasn’t possible to identify the flow and return pipes. After onnecting the rads and firing up the boiler I found that the pipe getting hot first is connected to the rad outlet whilst the pipe getting hot after ten minutes or so is connected to the inlet (there are...
