Quick question before I drain a rad to take it off... I have a combined radiator valve and drain plug but I’m not sure what the drain off drains!

If I close the valve to stop water entering the rad and I then open the drain off nut, does the water come out from the rad or does it come from the central heating system (bypassing the fact the valve is closed)?

Simple thing but I have no idea how the valve/drain is constructed!

Depends on the valve. Can you post pics . if its the type where a hose can be attached to the nozzle that's at an angle ,by closing both radiator valves and opening the square ended spindle you can drain the radiator. Opening rad valves will drain system.

So close off the valves and open the drain nut and the system should stay filled whilst the rad drains?

Yes. Count the amount of turns it takes to close fully. When ready to open the valve ,return it to the original position. This will maintain the systems balance. You will need to open the air bleed valve on the rad to facilitate draining ,after opening the square ended spindle of the drain cock.

If you intend to leave the radiator off for any appreciable length of time ,cap the valves . Especially if one is a TRV.
