    Damp: concern or not?

Hi, Have had a bit of damp under our stairs (it’s open, not a cupboard). It mostly shows on old rucksacks etc that hang there for years and then we notice they’re a bit moldy! It’s an external wall (we’re end of terrace 1930s, with solid brick wall - no cavity) and is rendered. The render is...

    Weird metal bar in wall

Thanks everyone - have finally had time to investigate in the loft and found a (dead) cable lying under the insulation. Traced it back and it comes through the ceiling at about the right place. Also found a small hole with 2 cables poking out in the meter cupboard that have been cut but left in...

    Weird metal bar in wall

Great info - thanks John! It’s roughly above the circuit board and nowhere near the kitchen so unlikely to be water. There is some old electrical cabling in the loft in that kind of area, so expect it’s that. Will have a look tomorrow.

    Weird metal bar in wall

Hmm, the room’s above the gas meter, but nowhere near a fire or the kitchen, so could be! it’s not!

    Weird metal bar in wall

Could be - but why would that be going into the loft? Guess so, but the power for the socket seems to come from below and there’s nothing going up from it as far as I can tell. Will turn off the power and investigate/ chip out more of the old plaster this weekend.

    Weird metal bar in wall

There’s also a socket directly below it, but there’s no power in the loft, so not sure what cable it would be protecting. Is it likely to be shielding?

    Weird metal bar in wall

Good point about scale - should have though about that. Two more pics. One with measure and the other from further back. It’s about 20mm wide and looks like it runs the height of the room. No chimney breast in the room, so not that.

    Weird metal bar in wall

Hi, Just moved a bookcase that's been in place since we moved in and noticed the lining paper was peeling off & plaster sounded blown beneath it. On further investigation I found this. Any ideas what it is? Looks like a metal bar (very rusty!). We're a 1930s end of terrace and that's on our...

    Washing machine F 04 error

Cheers all. Just spent a happy hour taking it apart. Was really clogged up with gunk, so cleaned everything, but noticed that the drum is leaking around the joint. Tried to tighten it, but didn't help, so think it's time for a new one. Thanks for all the pointers.

    Washing machine F 04 error

Yep - did check that and it was totally clogged with old tissue (I think). Hoped that would be all of it, but suspect there’s more earlier in the outlet pipe work. Will take it apart and investigate tomorrow.

    Washing machine F 04 error

We've got a Hotpoint WT960 that keeps erroring F 04 (drainage / pump issue). I found the outlet hose was clogged with a tissue at the point it enters the drain, cleared it and ran it empty - all fine. But when we run it with a load it still errors. It'll run its spin & rinse cycles with a load...

    Weird fan fault Vaillant EcoMax

Hi, thanks for looking... all advice / thoughts gratefully received! Have an old Vaillant EcoMax 286 boiler that has had a strange intermittent fault over the past month. About a month ago, it wasn't firing up and after a reset, came up with error F30 which is 'lack of air flow through...

    Wiring for old Drayton LP111

Thanks Chris, If I did piggyback, would I have a problem fitting both wires into the new terminals - is there a standard way to do this? I put in a T4 for my mum a while ago (feed came from boiler on that set up) and the terminals didn't look big enough to take 2 wires.

    Wiring for old Drayton LP111

Hi, am after some advice about next steps in replacing our old Drayton LP111 - hoped it would be a simple change the controller but keep the same wiring, but on inspection I wonder if it's more complicated. The controller is connected to an old Vaillant Ecomax 236, but the wiring isn't what I...
