    Light bulbs wattage

Apologies for hijacking the thread, but I've been curious for a while about maximum power ratings for bulbs and would like to ask others who may understand. Say I have a light fitting that says use bulbs with a maximum power of 60w, I have always assumed this is because an old 60w bulb would...

Radiator cold - even after bleeding

Thanks both. Rad has a TRV, doesn't feel stuck but obviously could be faulty. Other rads in the zone work - will have a go at balancing when I get home tonight

Radiator cold - even after bleeding

Hi, I've just had an extension built with wet underfloor heating, and took the opportunity to split the heating into 3 zones. Kitchen/diner (with UFH), Lounge/hall (rads) & Bedrooms (rads). System is a combi boiler, 3 x Heatmiser Neo thermostats and 3 x S plan valves, and each rad has a TRV -...

    Tiling and Wood floor

Thanks - wood is 16mm and tiles are 10mm, plus adhesive for both The visible join between the two is 2 lengths each about 1m - 1.5m long, and I would have thought getting the levels to within say 2mm would look fine - is that reasonable, both in terms of looking ok and being achievable?

    Combined tiled and wood floor

Hi, We are about to fit flooring to a newly built kitchen / diner and will have hexagonal tiles on part of the floor and engineered wood on the rest. Tiles will cover about 12 sqm (including hall and toilet) and the wood about 24 sqm. Every tiler we have spoken to has said we should put the...

    Immersion heater thermostat

Thanks Flameport, what I think you are saying is go back and do what should have been done in the first place - often sound advice

    Immersion heater thermostat

Hi, I've got a house with a loft conversion including a shower room. Water supply is independent of rest of house - cold water header tank, vented cylinder, electric immersion heater and a big pump. Works a treat - usually... Thermostat on immersion heater tripped yesterday, I reset but it...

    Building Regs and Kitchen Extension

Don't know, but that was going to be my next question. I thought it was only the supplier who could - or will they give permission to an electrician who asks?

    Building Regs and Kitchen Extension

I had a closer look last night, the meter tails have PVC insulation and are blue & red, whereas the CU tails have braided outer insulation and are red & black. To a non-expert replacing them doesn't look excessive

He's quoted £270 + VAT to upgrade the tails and replace 3 of the circuit breakers with RCD protected ones (even though only 1 is needed, so price might comes a tiny bit - but I presume the breakers are a few quid each & just pull out so not much). These are London prices but still feels a bit...

    Building Regs and Kitchen Extension

Hi - I've had some to and fro with the electrician on the original question of whether I need a new CU Firstly he said I needed a new CU as old one was plastic - I disproved that with the help of this forum, NICEIC helpdesk, IET website FAQs and my local council building control who all said no...

    Building Regs and Kitchen Extension

No, not 5 inches of wasted space. The standard service gap is 50 mm isn't it? So at worst I'm going to have 75 mm of wasted space. The 75 mm is because I have a vertical steel column that is part of the structure stopping my bathroom from falling into the kitchen. Unfortunately steel has to go...

    Building Regs and Kitchen Extension

That's helpful, thanks. I will have a 32A circuit for the cooker, and a 32A circuit for the sockets so sounds like I can (a) supply the cooker as if it was one appliance and just have a single unfused switch on the wall to isolate it and (b) put sockets either directly behind the fridge & DW or...

    Building Regs and Kitchen Extension

This was my original plan but then I realised that with dishwasher, fridge, 2 x powered velux windows, ceiling mounted extractor fan, 2 x single ovens and hob (gas, but still needs electricity) then I could end up with an awful lot of wall mounted switches. I get the point that it is very...

    Building Regs and Kitchen Extension

The Dishwasher is integrated so if I put socket behind it then I would need to remove a fitted appliance to check or change a fuse. Fridge / freezer is freestanding (American type) so not as bad, but I 'd like to have a double socket where the second socket was accessible without pulling fridge...

    Building Regs and Kitchen Extension

Hi - sockets will be for fridge, dishwasher etc so plug in and forget. Room is being fitted from scratch so idea would be that electrician leaves a loop of wire behind where the cabinets will go, kitchen fitter cuts a socket sized hole in back of cupboard, pulls wire through, fits a back box etc...

    Building Regs and Kitchen Extension

Hi - another question, am I allowed to fix sockets to the inside of my kitchen cabinets or do they have to be mounted on the wall? I'm going to have a gap of about 125 mm between back of cabinets and wall so cutting a hole in cabinet to access a wall mounted socket will be a bit ugly. If I am...

    Fire doors and smoke alarms

Doggit - agreed, the 30 deaths are presumably from the relatively small number of people who have higher risks due to choice of appliance, but here is the advice from London Fire Brigade: 'If you live in a property that has gas appliances such as cookers, heaters and gas fires or solid...

    Fire doors and smoke alarms

A quick google gives an estimate, based on fire service survey in Liverpool, that fewer than 10% of house have CO monitors fitted so say 50m people in UK do not have this protection but only 30 deaths from CO poisoning every year. This means that for every night someone spends in a house with no...
