    Heating randomly turning off

Thanks Freddo, don't think we have a weather comp unit, but we do have a Honeywell CM907 programmable stat which I sometimes think is a bit too clever for it's own good! Heating went off at 6ish again last night but the flame icon was on on the stat. However, I turned the stat to "Off" and then...

    Heating randomly turning off

Hi all, Our heating randomly turns off once or twice a day, usually after it's been on for a few hours. E.g. it's just happened now at 6pm having been on since 3pm. Only realised because the house starts to chill down, then check the stat and it's 2 degrees under temp, rads are cold and the...

    Installing automatic bypass

Job done = no more overrun noise :) Thanks guys. Drained from the boiler as suggested into a new/clean bucket which I then popped back in the expansion tank so as not to lose any inhibitor. I've set the bypass to 0.2 bar. Tried dialling it up while feeling for the pipe to warm up but then the...

    Installing automatic bypass

Excellent, I'll give it a go with upsizing to 22mm either side of the auto bypass, and if that doesn't cure the noise I'll bite the bullet and go back and replace with 22mm, but sounds like it will be fine. Many thanks.

    Installing automatic bypass

Thanks, happy to get the torch out and put the effort in if necessary! One of the reasons I'm doing this is to eliminate the flow/pressure noise, is there a chance the 22mm to 15mm reduction is causing this or is it more likely just because the gate valve is only opened a crack (so as not to...

    Installing automatic bypass

Now we're getting somewhere - thanks St0rmer66. Would it make sense to replace the 15mm bypass pipework with 22mm while I'm there, or not necessary?

    Installing automatic bypass

If you're trying to catch me out I think you've succeeded ;) But I'm still not sure what to do about this valve (if anything). What would you do in my situation? Drain down and replace the valve with an auto or leave as is and perhaps crack open the valve a touch to reduce the pressure/noise on...

    Installing automatic bypass

To be fair to the guy he works for a larger company and presumably his remit is to do what's been spec'd and avoid getting roped into anything else! If he'd been independent I imagine he would have raised it and "upselled" the auto bypass, which I would have gone for if the price was right. If...

    Installing automatic bypass

Yep, I'd agree with that now I know what a bypass is! Boiler was fitted a couple of days ago and I didn't know what a bypass was until I read into it yesterday. I knew the system was making a noise on overrun and thought that the new boiler might sort that but it hasn't (which is obvious now I...

    Installing automatic bypass

Thanks - I thought that would be the case and can't see how I could lock off the return side as there's no valve that I can see. Main reason I'm thinking of replacing it is that during pump overrun it's rather noisy, makes a high pressure hissing sound, presumably as it's having to force the...

    Installing automatic bypass

Hi all, I'm considering replacing our old manual bypass valve with an automatic one. Is it possible to do this without draining the system? We've just had a new boiler fitted and inhibitor added so I'd rather not drain it unless I have to. Please see photo. If I close the zone valves, the...

    Potterton Prima 80 cutting out

Thanks Tony. I'm well aware that getting a registered engineer out to repair it will probably be a non-starter as no one touches old boilers these days and unfortunately I don't have a spare £2-3k burning a hole in my back pocket at the moment! Even if I did it would take a long time to see...

    Potterton Prima 80 cutting out

Hi all, We have a problem with our old Potterton Prima 80. It runs fine for a few hours and then just randomly turns off (even if the room stat is demanding it to be on). Only way to get it to come back on is to turn the mains power off and on again. The reset button does NOT pop out...

    Damp blocked off chimneys

No, chimney breasts haven't been removed. They're visible (jut out) on the side of the house. I think they serve the downstairs fireplaces (which are deeper) and the chimneys for the upstairs fireplaces are basically in the wall cavity? It's a detached house with 2 chimneys each serving 2...

    Damp blocked off chimneys

Annoted photo showing blocked chimney 1, the worst one that's been blocked for at least 2 years and getting worse despite being vented at bottom.

    Damp blocked off chimneys

Thanks Ree. I'll post a sketch in a bit, but basically that pick is taken in the loft where the floor of the loft meets the chimney, right down in the corner of the eaves. The joist isn't rotting, and as you can see from the pics the water appears to have risen through it from below...

    Damp blocked off chimneys

Hi all, Got a problem with the chimneys in our 1930's house. Both upstairs bedroom chimneys. Chimney 1 was already blocked off and vented when we moved in about 2 years ago. It had some signs of damp at the time which were gradually getting worse. The roof was shot anyway so we had that...
