well gap between your new extension will fill with all sorts of wind born detritus between the wall. will coarse you damp problem eventually so somehow you need to agree with your neighbour how to prevent this happening, because either you will have damp problem or wall will fall down.

Chris you are measuring and comparing two different things. On the left hand you are measuring thread diameter, on the right you are measuring the nut size, across flats to be precise. If you look under nut you will find same 15mm male thread.

Agree with CJ, you basically need to seal the old paint / plaster and start afresh.
