    Extending existing extension

Hi. Thank you for your response. So basically the answer is that new wall will have to be insulated even though it is going to be just extension of the existing 9" that is not currently insulated. I think in that case I will just do cavity wall instead and have step out on the outside. No point...

    Extending existing extension

Hi I am planning to extend my 2m long extension to 5m. Walls on the old extension are 9" brick with no cavity. My question is do I need to demolish existing walls and start fresh building up the cavity wall or can I retain these and simply continue on new concrete footing with 9" brick...

    Distance of doors from landing

Good morning, I have moved a bathroom wall to enlarge the bathroom. Previously the door was swinging outside and there was a small area in front of it. I have moved the wall bringing it closer to the staircase that is coming from the ground floor but with the door swinging inwards now. My friend...

    Dangerous support under steel beam

Ok. Thank you very much for your comments everybody. I will have the building inspector to decide. Hopefully it will not be covered up by then.

    Dangerous support under steel beam

Ok great. So I have nothing worried about then? That is what they said, they will fill the parts where the brick is missing with brick and mortar. You have no idea how big of a relieve this all is. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

    Dangerous support under steel beam

Yes the top bit of concrete is a cast in situ padstone. That is ok. The part that I'm worried about is the bottom part with missing brick. They are saying that they will repair it with brick and mortar but is this sufficient? Thank you.

    Dangerous support under steel beam

Good evening, I am doing a single story house extension. Builders I have hired have demolished ouside wall to connect an existing house with new extension. They have installed steel beam according to the plans. My worry is that looking at the support it doesn't seem very stable as they have in...

    Kerdi board adhesive

Good afternoon, After watching bunch of youtube videos I have decided to use Kerdi boards for my shower. One thing I don't understand is that they refer in those videos to unmodified thinset mortar and modified thinset mortar. After reading few previous treads it seems that modified mortar is S2...

Timber beam connection to existing masonry

Ok. So are you guys saying that we should cut wall plate, remove 1-2 layers of brick, put in the timber beam over window, maybe put in few screws through into the masonry and then put rafters onto the beam and that should all hold? It doesn't seem very stable to me, but I'm no expert so I will...

Timber beam connection to existing masonry

Rotate/move I guess I am trying to make sure it stays in its position. If it doesn't move, why do they fix wall plates with straps?

Timber beam connection to existing masonry

Good morning, We are doing a loft conversion. Structural engineer has designed timber beams over existing windows below to carry the load of rafters and transfer it away from window lintels. In order to install this beam and achieve correct level for rafters, we will have to match the top side...

Steel beam sticking out of pitched roof

So engineer came back after few days (I think someone more senior has interfered after I complained) and this is what they came back with. I though I'd post it here so it can serve for people to see another take on the issue. See attached drawing.

Steel beam sticking out of pitched roof

Thanks a lot Tony for all this. I have passed on the information you gave me onto the structural engineer and told him to be detailed so we can build this thing. This is what he came back with. Would you mind taking a quick look at this if it is going to work? I don't trust this guy anymore and...

Steel beam sticking out of pitched roof

I found in catalogue UB254 that fits quite well for the level difference. When I sketched it out there is still bit sticking out. Can we cut the part of the flange that sticks out? And actually is it safe to make it the way I sketched it?

Steel beam sticking out of pitched roof

Thank you for that Harry. I have actually found the same picture online :) The problem is that no matter how I crank it, beam will either protrude into the bedroom under or out of the roof. House is terraced so I can't lift the line of the roof unfortunately. I have attached a sketch if the...

Steel beam sticking out of pitched roof

Can you guys please at least roughly sketch what would cranked beam look like? What they told me today was that there is not enough space to put cranked beam in there.

Steel beam sticking out of pitched roof

Good afternoon, We have started loft conversion today. Sadly after builders uncovered the roof they discovered that unlike structural engineer's assumption existing joists are not resting on the wall but are attached to rafters which then take the load to the wall which is much lower. I have...
