Loft conversion issue: Short term solution with long term benefit.

Yeah I’ve seen that suggested before. You mean just wedge the 4x2 as far in to the eaves as it will go? Then screw into ceiling joists? What’s the best method for getting around the 7x2 binder at mid span? Notch it out and attach it to new joists?

Loft conversion issue: Short term solution with long term benefit.

Thanks for the advice. Think I’m going to just go with the purlin hanger idea for now. Dan

Loft conversion issue: Short term solution with long term benefit.

I see what you mean. The reason I didn’t want to just build on ceiling joist was that they are only 3x2 holding lath and plaster ceiling, so really want to reduce deflection. Also, need space for insulation so thought on top of binder made more sense. Good idea about longer joists across...

Loft conversion issue: Short term solution with long term benefit.

Good idea about checking joist size. Surely by hanging from binders I’m transferring the load to the walls the binder is bearing on? Thry are bedded in party wall one side and rest on load bearing wall other side. I will probably put some hangers in from the purlins too.

Loft conversion issue: Short term solution with long term benefit.

Hi all. Im currently doing a load of work on the house and decided the loft would be a good place to store some unused materials and some tools. This is not going to be anything like a loft conversion. I just want a few boards up there for storage, which is easy enough. Im planning on hanging...

    Tap confusion

Hi, We bought these for our new bath: https://www.victorianplumbing.co.uk/cruze-deck-bath-side-valves-with-freeflow-bath-filler Note: there are two taps, only one pictured. Connections are 3/4. I have done all the plumbing in PEX so I intend to adapt into 3/4 to go into the taps, but I just...

Lime plaster wall in bathroom. Renovate or replace?

It’s first floor. Solid brick. And fairly exposed. Never noticed damp in there. Always been dry apart from when the other half forgets to open window for showers.

Lime plaster wall in bathroom. Renovate or replace?

I’m stripping our bathroom and found that behind all the layers of skin and tile over the years, we have lime plaster on the external solid wall. My initial plan was to just leave it be, but annoyingly it is blown from about 300mm above where the top of the new bath is going to be. The wall is...

My joists are too long. Should I be worried.

I’m doing some work on the house and have had cause to take the kitchen ceiling down. When I did I noticed that a wall I had presumed to be load bearing was not actually in contact with the joists, only the cladding (see pic). It’s a 1930s house and joists are 7”x2”. The span across the room is...

What to do with bathroom walls?

I have a tiny bathroom (1650x1550) so space is at a premium. We want to install a bath with a bar mixer shower and i was wondering whats the best way of getting the pipes hidden without sacrificing too much space? The wall the shower will be on is a masonry party wall currently with plaster and...

Question about a load bearing wall.

More news. I knocked a few holes in to see if I could find any vertica supports. Only 2, either side of door frame. You can see in one pic here where the door frame meets the wall plate that I can get a scraper in the gap quite easy so there is no load bearing down. Same story on other side. You...

Question about a load bearing wall.

Pics: https://imgur.com/gallery/sNOWdwS *quick note to say id never go ahead with knocking this down based on advice received over the internet and would get a pro in for opinion. If, however, someone points out that’s it obviously is load bearing, I’ll give up on the idea.* I’m currently...
