Of course I was only guessing that soot was the reason. Already after getting the fire 'repaired' again yesterday it takes two attempts to get it to light.

I really appreciate your advice, Ian. Could you point me in the direction of a suitable pilot injector cleaner? I've already spent nearly £200 paying engineers not to fix this fire. Blowing out the soot allows the fire to light and stay lighted, but only for a week or so until the soot starts...

The fire is a Flavel Calibre Balanced Flue Brass FBFC1SRN3. It would be fair to say that it's been doing my head in. Cleaning the pilot should normally fix the problem, but not in this case.

It's on a Flavel gas fire. I had two engineers look at it. They both cleaned it out and one of them replaced the thermocouple but the flame is still very weak. What do you think might be causing it?

I had another idea: to screw hooks into the rafters then stretch net curtain wire between them. The wire could easily be shortened if the board looks too saggy. This is more within my comfort zone than working with wood.

I am no roofer either. :) I'm not clear how large or wide the battens would need to be. As Westmarcher explained above, raising them up will not stop them sagging in the middle.

It's just a standard combi waste kit. I don't need a new kit. I replaced the screw with a nice solid M12 bolt and it has made a good seal.

Believe it or not this screw/bolt was used to connect a kitchen sink drain to the waste pipe below - that is until the screwhead abruptly sheared off causing a mini flood. The sink was fitted about 10 years ago I think (not that the sink manufacturer can be blamed as waste kits are sold...

The guy who put it up was an alarm installer by trade. That explains the weird fixing.
