    Water leak

Bump, any advice or thoughts here would be much appreciated. Keen to finally get this rectified without throwing more money than is necessary at it. TIA

    Water leak

So I've managed to get some much better photos of the mess that is my roof/chimney. I would like to hear some people's opinions on what I am dealing with here and what others would do, I have had a 1st quote for a chimney overhaul consisting of the following. Removing vertical stack slates...

    Water leak

So, I've had a damp investigation carried out and they determined that this ingress is indeed because of the lack of any lead trays in the stack. Heavy rain permeates the 130 year old brickwork and pointing down to where the stack meets the roof and subsequently wicks up the roof slope around...

    Water leak

Sorry I mean there are actual slate tiles hung vertically on the side of the chimney if you look closely in the photos. But yes, you are bang on slate was original house, left chimney was part of the extension on the left, a shoddily built one at that.

    Water leak

Good spot, it does indeed look rough. No sign of any damp in that location internally though, all seems to be on the opposite side of the red/white stack, exactly where those tiles are that have gaps...and going up towards the valley as per my previous photo with yellow outline. Thanks

    Water leak

I have a telescopic inspection camera on charge to take a look from the loft later as the area is boarded up so will try that before ripping boards/insulation up. I will request photos of the back gutter and pots. What are your thoughts on the right side of the stack being tiled in slate, it's...

    Water leak

I fell off a ladder pretty badly years ago so heights or ladders for that matter are not my strong point unfortunately. I am waiting for the roofer to come back and inspect the work his staff carried out, he has already suggested it could be the stack tray in which case a new chimney is...

    Water leak

Not great pictures but I hope it gives some perspective, everything within the yellow line is damp to the point of it beading down the wall after heavy rain, moreso on the blue upper section. It look's as though it starts from the valley further up and then comes down and pools around the...

    Water leak

So I had some roofing repairs carried out. The main one being a chimney stack that was letting water in around the back gutter, they confirmed the lead had split and replaced it and i settled up with them. Last night's storm meant rain for hours and water is again dripping down the walls as it...

    Outdoor kitchen - block seating

Thanks Chibs, appreciate the pointers. I’ll give laying them on their backs a go before going the normal block route. I was planning on rendering the lot, best way to learn is the hard way right…

    Outdoor kitchen - block seating

So I started building up my kitchen/bbq counter on the right. Whilst I was out I checked the state of the bench back rest and as expected it’s about as sturdy as a 3 legged donkey, a couple of blocks didn’t bond properly but Ive come to learn that the blocks should be brushed with water to...

    Outdoor kitchen - block seating

    Oh pants :( Perhaps I will rebuild it at some point then.. I was planning on using the same blocks to build up my kitchen counter, which of course will be subject to downward pressure and not lateral, something like this;

    Gas barbecue burners orange/sooty

I had this issue with a gas powered smoker, turns out that over winter spiders had created lots of webs in the burner pipe/s. After clearing this out with a pipe cleaner and some compressed air it was back to blue flames.

    Outdoor kitchen - block seating

Hi Guys I am getting started on my outdoor kitchen and have built up a block bench, do you think the rear wall of the bench will be strong enough or should I double block it? I probably could have incorporated more arm rests that tie into the wall for strength but it didn't occur to me till I...

Wooden cladding/decking on block wall - adhesive?

Hi All We have a block dwarf wall that runs the length of the garden (15m), original plan was to render but seems alot of work and not something I feel confident doing whilst getting a quality finish. Thought perhaps fixing decking boards or treated timber, horizontally to the face and top to...

Building floor above stairwell - wall plates/joist hangers?

Wish I had asked here before haha, would've saved myself a load of faff! Note taken about the chipboard. I am planning on flooring the entire area and framing out a hatch for basement access, something like this.

Building floor above stairwell - wall plates/joist hangers?

Cheers for the reassurance it is indeed 700mm span, I am sure my bodgery will hold up I just wanted to know the "right" way. (The missus still thinks she will find me at bottom of stairs with broken legs ) Not sure I quite understand the ladder frame, also I haven't notched anything...
