    Light Fitting Change Question

Thanks mate. So essentially on a metal light run the bare cable into the earth socket? If I’m fitting a plastic rose, does the bare wire just stay loose like here? Cheers

Hi Everyone, Looking to work out whether I should attempt to change 2 ceiling light fittings or if I should get a professional in. I have old wiring on the 2 lights in question as shown here and looking to swap for ceiling mounted metal fittings that have up to date wiring etc. First...

Wiring a light switch - old to new

Wiring a light switch - old to new

No it was right for the bathroom light. Left for the other light and extractor fan. Which doesn’t make sense really but seemed to be how it was done. I would ideally want bathroom light and fan together, but doesn’t matter too much either way

Wiring a light switch - old to new

Hi Terry, they were in the that terminal. The first picture, anything that’s in is how it was but some of the other wires had pulled out of course. Both switches were working however the bathroom fan was actually coming on with the none bathroom switch, the left gang, so would assume this was...

Wiring a light switch - old to new

So I’ve rewired the old switch back in for now so it’s at least working. I’ve tried to draw out the current configuration as apologies I know my photos and explaining hasn’t been very clear. Currently each switch turns a different light on, but isn’t powering the extractor fan which is was...

Wiring a light switch - old to new

No unfortunately these other wires came out when I removed the switch! My photo isn’t great. But the grey and red connected are actually both coming from separate wires, left and right. The other red from the right and brown from the left side went into L1. The final red wire from the left...

Wiring a light switch - old to new

Thanks for the help all. So turns out I have a bigger issue than I first thought as I have at least 4 brass switches that are only earthed via the backplate. With the new one I’m fitting, I have been able to get the earth wires to the faceplate, but not sure which other wire goes where if...

Wiring a light switch - old to new

Hi Terry, sorry me again. I have the same switch but 3 gang in another room which builders fit for me. I've had a look at that one and it's not earthed either. I've photo'd the configuration. Is this essentially not safe then? I've got a few of these brass switches around they wired in and was...

Wiring a light switch - old to new

Hi Terry, appreciate the reply. So in terms of earthing, will I need a professional in most likely? I'm not able to rewire myself basically, I could simply re-position what is already there. The brown bridge wire does reach com to com on the new switch, as I did check before. So not sure if...

Hi Guys, Can someone please help me: 1.Identify whether this switch will be safe to wire 2. Which wires need to go where? These old electrical set ups really confuse me! Thank you. Old switch wiring (The loose red wire was in one side of the red bridge. The loose live red and brown wires...

    Hive Wiring Help

Thank you mate, fingers crossed you’re right then. I should never have had a go at it tbh, out of my depth! Especially as you noticed, the wires don’t quite make sense! If it’s useful, this is how it was wired up originally to the WR1 receiver so I’ve pretty much mirrored this in the end but...

    Hive Wiring Help

Hi All, would really appreciate some help if possible! Purchased a Hive system to install to my Worcester Combi boiler. It was already set up with an old British Gas smart thermostat and WR1 receiver so I was hoping to keep the backplate and just switch over. Anyway it wouldn’t fit and the...
