    Can i convert a 28w 2D light fitting to use 38w lamps ?

Thanks for the helpful replies. I had a quick look for LED replacements and couldn't see anything particularly bright at Screwfix, but on looking further I see there are plenty on Amazon.

    Can i convert a 28w 2D light fitting to use 38w lamps ?

My mum has two kitchen ceiling lights that use 28w 2D lamps with 2 pin fittings. Her eyesight is getting worse and it would be helpful to fit a brighter lamp but the 38w ones are 4 pin and the ballast inside the fitting will need upgrading. Can I just buy 38w ballasts and 4 pin sockets to...

Help needed to identify spiral shank nail

Does anyone know where nails like these can be purchased ? The closest thing I can find on Google is an American brand called Maze, but they don't have the same domed head. Thanks John

Problem with T8 fluorescent tube and SRS ballast ?

Yes, you may well be right - but I'm curious to know the reason why a T8 tube won't work with an SRS ballast.

Problem with T8 fluorescent tube and SRS ballast ?

I've got an old twin striplight fitting in a garage which wasn't working. I replaced the blown 1.25 amp fuse inside the fixture with a 3 amp one and now one of the 5 foot T12 tubes is working. I tried swapping them round to check it was the tube and not the circuit. I read somewhere that...

Immersion heater with twin thermostats ?

Hi Matt, When I went to take out the old thermostat, I discovered that the rod was wet - which I'm sure will explain why it has blown. Time to call in the professionals. But thanks again for your help. John

Immersion heater with twin thermostats ?

Matt, Thanks for your reply - is it yes to the first question (it's bust, get another one from B&Q) ? John (also from Tyne & Wear originally)

Immersion heater with twin thermostats ?

My neighbour's immersion heater has stopped working. It appears to have 2 Sunvic thermostats - a VKL 2201 and a VKL 2251. There is power getting to the live terminal of the 2201, but the wire linking it to the 2251 seems to be dead. I presume from this that the 2201 is faulty; if so is it OK...

Wiring a hot water tank with two immersion heaters

Is there a reason why both elements shouldn't be run together ? The tank isn't huge (170 litres I think) but if people are waiting for showers it seems strange not to use them both. I don't have an off-peak supply.

Wiring a hot water tank with two immersion heaters

I've just replaced an old copper hot water cylinder with an unvented system made by UV Gold. The old one was small and only had one immersion heater; the newer one is larger and has two - one near the base and one higher up. This is our only source of hot water. The exisiting supply is 2.5mm...

    Which electric chainsaw?

I've had two electric chainsaws. The first one was Castellgarden and had a number of problems. I eventually replaced it with a Flymo Woodshark, which I got for about £75 from B&Q. I've been very pleased with it. However I only really use it for sawing up logs, not major tree work.

Black plastic mains water pipe - questions

Well, the water level in the stream dropped a bit today and I managed to re-join the Plass4 connectors and stop the leaks. I cleaned the threads and applied a bit of PTFE tape. Had to tighten them fairly firmly, with a wrench. All I can see written on the black pipe is "POLYPRENE 1972 BS 1" -...

Black plastic mains water pipe - questions

Nice idea but the stream is about 4 metres wide and the bed is about 2 metres below ground level at the bridge. The sides are built up with vertical stone banks. I don't think the iron bar would go in more than a few inches - it's pretty rocky. I think I've identified the connectors as...

Black plastic mains water pipe - questions

Well, technically speaking it's a burn, as we are in Scotland. It didn't freeze last year, and it was b****y cold then as well !!

Black plastic mains water pipe - questions

Thanks to everyone for the input. Could I use a push-fit fitting to join the black and blue pipes together ? They look easier to insulate than the ones I have at the moment and would keep us going until we can dig out and replace the whole section. John

Black plastic mains water pipe - questions

Thanks Tony, I was afraid that might be the case. Unfortunately it would mean digging up tarmac on one side of the bridge but I suppose we could do it if we had to. John

Black plastic mains water pipe - questions

Our underground water supply pipe is 3/4" black plastic and it crosses a stream on its way to the house, via a small bridge where it is fixed to a suporting steel I beam. It froze up in the recent cold weather. One reason for this is that it has frozen in the past and burst, and has been...
