    Hi 2nd picture with magnet fully loosened will catch washing machine but clearly not a satisfactory solution at all. 1st picture is hinge - all 4 screws are tightened to the max it seems in answer to Harry's question - it does not exactly spring back but it simply does not connect...

    Thank you everyone so far for your lovely help. I think I have cracked the reason but not the answer I think I've found the problem - I loosened the screws on the magnet attached to the door and stuffed some paper raising the magnet nearly a cm from the door - and by presto it caught...

    Thank you so much -for such quick and useful advice. I tried the 2p pieces - I can get one to stick to the magnet on the washing machine side but not the door magnets (presumably a polarity issue) - loosening the door magnets doesn't solve the issue either so I'm thinking the door alignment...
