    Solid Wood Floor Finish

Hi, After lifting an old carpet in our new house we've uncovered the original five finger mosaic parquet solid wood floor which looks like either teak, mahogany or possibly dark oak. It appears to have been originally varnished but is scratched and worn through to the bare wood in some places...

Online Suppliers - Double Glazed Units

Hi all. I need to order up several replacement double glazed units for a new house and wondered if anyone can suggest any good online suppliers or ones to avoid? I'll try and find some local manufacturers to quote too, but am interested to see how the online suppliers compare/...

    Cladding Old Fireplaces

Hi all, I'm in the process of opening up an old fireplace ready for a log burner to be installed next month. The old 1970s fireplace and associated masonry have all gone, so I'm left with the original brick firebox. When the house was first built (1880s brick cottage) the fireplace had a...

Metal cased wiring is it safe

Depends on the size of cable! We still use PILC (Paper Insulated, Lead Covered) cables to distribute power around our site at 6.6kV. Mind you I think that the smallest size we've got is 120mm² 3 core, so you're unlikely to find any in your average home :)

Use Of Old SWA in new Install

Also depends on what you priced for. If you were working on one of my contracts for a new install, and re-used old cable or equipment without prior agreement then I wouldn't be best pleased. You'd be told to rip it all out and do the work again, and you'd probably also be crossed off the list...

    Schneider Electric 17th edition quiz

I said D as well. I'm still not sure I really understand what they were geting at with that question. I managed 23 without the book though...

    Schneider Electric 17th edition quiz

Oh dear. That wasn't pretty  Mind you, unless you know the 17th inside out (or have a copy in front of you at the time) it's a pretty tough test...

    pictures of a recent job

Well I'll give you a complement if no-one else will! It may not be perfect, but it looks a tidy enough job to me. It's certainly better than 99% of the setups you'd find in a garage... :)

Why Not Different Colours For Switch Cables?

It's also another roll of cable to buy at an extortionate price, and carry around from job to job. It's not a bad idea in itself, but if people can't remember (or be bothered) with a little bit of PVC tape now, how would using a different type of cable altogether be any better?

    Consumer unit replaced

Did you ask them to leave them? If not, then why assume that they would? They probably thought they were doing you a favour by clearing up after themselves.

Testing of radial circuit, which feed an ring final circuit

Well I can't argue with that...! I might start calling it a Electricity Control Unit or ECU for short instead though. I like the sound of that. It'll also have the added amusement of really confusing and worrying any petrol heads when I tell them I'm about to connect their ECU to the...

Testing of radial circuit, which feed an ring final circuit

Surely CCU = Cooker Control Unit CU = Consumer Unit That's the way I was taught - or is it just me? :?

How to open electricity meter box without key.....

You can buy them from the diy sheds (I bought one from B&Q not so long ago). I've since seen them in my local hardware shop as well, so they're pretty widely available.

    17th edition CU

Believe me it needs to be! I fitted one of these (actually a Hager 7+5 + 1 unprotected from memory) a few weeks back and when all the ways are used (I had a couple of temporary circuits in at the time so had a full bank of breakers) there wasn't a lot of space left for the last couple of...

Help please with my Central Heating / Hot water Programmer T

Do you know what type of system you've got? I'm no expert but from experience I know that most of the manufacturers use different wiring colours and configurations. It also depends on whether your system uses a three way valve (e.g. a Honeywell Y plan) or two way valves (e.g. Honeywell S...

    consumer unit trouble

Yep, I bet it's not got a label on the front warning about wiring colours to two versions of BS7671 either...

BT phone socket and network socket in one single faceplate?

This might be the sort of thing you're after? http://uk.rs-online.com/web/search/searchBrowseAction.html?method=getProduct&R=2622876#header The picture doesn't seem to match the description, but I think it's a generic picture used for the whole range. Might be worth giving RS a call and...

Had a custom distribution board built

Since we're on the topic of custom DBs, this is one I planned and wrote the specification for a couple of years ago. It was built by one of our general electrical contractors using mainly Merlin Gerin components. It's a two section DB for a computer room, equipped with full fault monitoring...
