consumer unit trouble

to be frank, the person who fitted it seems to have no understanding so I would not trust him to put it right.

It is below the standard I would expect of a typical DIYer doing an (illegal) installation.

If it was just one of the common simple errors, like a single wire in the wrong place, we could point it out.

Looking at that picture again - besides the link between the neutral bars, is there what looks to be a live going to the earth bar or is that just where he 'parked' one of the live conductors for the RCD side of the board?

Also, John D, is it right to use one short piece of brown 2.5mm t+e to that left hand side choc block which looks like it then goes to a ring? Is it possible that the short section could become overloaded if the ring was used at a high load or is this the way it should be done :?:

No, it's not right.
It's a potential fire hazard as the short piece of 2.5mm cable could potentially carry a sustained load of 32A which it's not rated for.

It really is a terrible effort and an example of how NOT to carry out a consumer unit change.

yes, it would normaly be buried in the ground outside close to the wall near the meter.

Even if the cap was hidden e.g. by a bush, you would be able to see a thick Green&Yellow (or possibly copper) cable near the consumer unit and going outside.

see if you can trace where the thick G&Y on the RHS of you CU goes to. it might just be a water pipe which is not sufficient.

It is possible that you will be able to get your electricity supplier to provide you with an earthing point, they do this by earthing the incoming neutral at frequent intervals. these days it is often available even from an overhead supply. they might charge £50-£100 for it or they might do it free. You can ask your electricity supplier (just write to the address on your bill) although it actually be done by someone else.

edited: if they can, they will put it at the RHS of that Grey plastic item in
View media item 1189take some more pics of it, face on.

Never mind the ring extended with 2.5 into a 32A breaker, what about the other B32's feeding undersized cable...

To the OP.

Very sorry to break bad news to you, but this installation is not to the regulations & is dangerous.

Don't pay this fella anything for his work. He has shown very clearly that he cannot carry out this work, on several different levels.

Do what you can to recover any money from him & employ someone who is competent, as previously mentioned.

Prize goes to RF Lighting then - neutral to the RCD should be fed into the top not the bottom of the module as he has done.

:D :D :D

Just seen the pic of the inside of the CU.

That really is not good.

There are alot of things wrong.

Theres so much glaringly wrong with that board it has to be a joke right

Kind of thing you expect to see on 2391 - look at this board and record any faults that you can see

I would just like to say, that, that "job" is a reflection of the person who did it.

How the hell did the fella think that putting the connectors in to get the cables to reach the MCB's was either acceptable or professional.

That is a sack'o' ****e, get him back after you have got a proper sparks to fix it and then kick his *******s right up his arse

Now I must go to mass
