    Llama...why not hire a medium sized rotovator. This should be able to break up the soil even if it is compacted. What you might need to do is water the area the night before (difficult if you have a hosepipe ban I know) and that should make it a whole bunch easier. Most good hire centres have them.

    Yes but let's be honest it's easy in the summer good hand dexterity well lit displays ect, wait until the middle of winter.....numb fingers freezing cold pumps, poor light.......that's when the men get sorted from the boys!

    Hi sm1thson JohnD is right about the method on this but there is another approach. Get yourself down to your local garden centre diy merchant, pick up a pack of Weed-Feed-and Moss Kill.....it will do exactly what it says on the box only all at the same time. Without meaning to advertise...

    Hi larrydiy Hope you don't mind me jumping in here.......If you do decide to use a weedkiller,make sure it's systemic. This will be taken by the weed right through it's entire system down to it's roots. No chance of it coming back ....unless new seed germination. Some weeds (Japanese Knot weed)...
