    Strange System Noises

I had my mid-position valve replaced in the summer. Since then I have had occasional strange noises coming from the heating system. A loud bang If sitting in the living room, it sounds as if it is from the boiler in the kitchen. But my wife thinks it is coming from the loft. Gurgling in...

    HUGE complex calculation required ...........

Sorry to intrude on another conversation, but I have also been looking for instructions about setting an ABV and those of the manufacturers are not very helpful! I can understand the first two lines above, but the third baffles me :? What do I have to "work out for pipe"? Would you...

    Boiler never reaches temperature

Just done a gas rate test. It took 65 seconds for one revolution of the dial. This works out at about 55 cuft/hour. The manual says 62, so the rate is a bit below spec; but is it enough to make such a difference?

    Boiler never reaches temperature

It's a bit hot now (38 in the conservatory, 28 in the living room) so I don't feel like getting the house any hotter at the moment :) Will post the answer later, possibly tomorrow.

    Boiler never reaches temperature

Thanks for the offer; I may take you up on this. Though I wouldn't like you to get into your dad's bad book! Will email you for info about rates etc.

    Boiler never reaches temperature

The return temperature is about 10degC lower than the flow (Boiler insts specify a 11degC drop across the rads and a 9degC drop at the boiler.) There are 13 rads. I don't have their specs but have used the outputs from the current Stelrad Elite range, which are similar, to estimate their...

    Boiler never reaches temperature

It can't be the boiler stat. If it had failed, open, then the boiler would never light. If it had failed, closed, then the boiler would heat up until the overheat stat switched it off. Gas is a Corgi thing - not for me!! The boiler needs a service in any case. Any Corgi Registered readers...

    Boiler never reaches temperature

I have a Myson Apollo 15kW boiler with just a two position HI-Low temperature switch. It does not matter which position the switch is in, the flow temperature at the boiler never gets to more than 55degC (measured with a clip on thermometer). I turned the CH thermostat way up to 30degC, to make...

    Low Energy Bulbs and dimmers

Could someone please explain why they are not compatible? I had low energy bulbs nearly everywhere in my last house but, when I moved recently, I found that most rooms have dimmer switches. So I am stuck with conventional bulbs. The cost of low energy bulbs is high enough without the cost of...

Why does my pump get noisy when rads are turned off?

From what you have written you may be wired as a Honeywell Sundial W Plan. This needs to have HW switched on to make the heating work. Info on the Sundial plans can be found at: http://content.honeywell.com/uk/homes/catalogu.htm If you click on "Section 3 - Sundial Plans" in the centre...

Why does my pump get noisy when rads are turned off?

It's not a good idea to isolate the pump by shutting off the valves either side as the pump relies on the flow of water to lubricate the bearings! You say that the feed from the 3-way valve (1 in and two out) to the cylinder coil is 22mm but the connection from the cylinder to the boiler...

Why does my pump get noisy when rads are turned off?

Why do you turn the rads off?? Is it because you do not have a timeswitch with separate on-off switches for heating and hot water? If you do have separate switches, then all you need to do is to set the heating switch to "off" and leave the hotwater switch at "timed" or "constant" (the words...

That's what I thought. What would you do in this situation? The plasterer is supposed to start tomorrow!

    Conservatory walls drying out

You are quite right! It did rain quite heavily in the week between doing the base and putting up the walls and roof. The top of the wall was protected, so no rain could get down into the cavity. The dampness must just be the result of water laying on the base and splashing up. But why is it...

    Conservatory walls drying out

I asked the supplier if there is a dpc in the inner skin of the wall and was assured that there is. I'm not worried about the efflorescent salt line - that will get covered by the plaster. It is the dampness underneath that line, which does not appear to be drying out, which concerns me. Is...

    Conservatory walls drying out

I am having a new conservatory to replace a 20 year old softwood one which had gone rotten. The walls and their foundations are new; but the base has been built up on top of the old concrete one with a 50mm polystyrene layer and plastic membrane. This was done about six weeks ago. The...

    Balancing Radiators

Just to make life difficult, the boiler is downstairs and the pump and motorised valve in the airing cupboard upstairs so presumably the upstairs ones will need turning down more than the downstairs. I have two clip on thermometers (brannan) from the last time; but they are mighty slow...
