Control heating when not at home

The house is a terraced house built in the early 60's. The oil boiler is a Honeywell Boiler with a thermostat on the top of it allowing the temperature to be set between 65 and 90. There is one pump in line from the boiler to circulate the water through the system. This heats both the radiators...

Control heating when not at home

We have an oil fired boiler for our house which provides radiator heating and hot water. The system cannot heat the hot water independently of the radiators. There is no thermostats controlling room temperatures. All the radiators have thermostatic radiator valves. The heating on/off is...

Using white plastic hollow soffit boards to clad wooden shed frame

Building a shed and was going to clad it with uPVC white hollow soffit board applied horizontally. I will be using the secret nailing technique to fix it to the frame. I am planning to install a breathable vapour barrier onto the exterior 4 by 1 inch frame and then install the soffit. In the...

    Flat roof or hip roof?

I've been dealing with an architect for a planning application which involves a second story build over an existing single story kitchen extension at the rear of the house. He's been talking about putting a flat roof over the extension as opposed to a hip roof. I'm not that keen on a flat roof...

    Outside toilet

TBH insulating the build is one of my main concerns too when approaching this project. I was thinking of putting battens on the inside wall and insulating between the battens with something like 25mm insulation board and then sheet this with the splash panel boards that you can get for showers.

    Outside toilet

I live in a mid terraced house with a single story kitchen extension out the back already built when we moved into the house 18 years ago. The toilet in the house is downstairs and I was looking into extending over the kitchen extension to add a small bathroom upstairs to save tramping...

    Wall preparation before Wallpapering

I'm not fully up with the lingo but when you chat about blinding coat do you mean painting the walls with an undiluted coat of white matt emulsion before hanging the paper?

    Wall preparation before Wallpapering

I'm planning to wallpaper two walls, ones a stud wall and the other a brick wall both plastered and have been wallpapered before. Is there any sense in applying or painting something to the walls before papering in order to dampen the surface to make sure that the wall doesn't soak up the paste?

    Above the bathroom window

As Gazman says it's most likely a reinforced concrete lintel. What kind of drill were you using? From my experience a bog standard drill even with hammer action is tough going if trying to drill into a lintel. An SDS style drill will make the going easier

Joing UPVC side window to UPVC door frame

I've installed a new UPVC back door and frame to my back shed with frame fixers and I'm waiting on a re-ordered side window as the supplier got the original measurements for the window 40mm too wide for the opening. What is the best way to fix the side window to the door frame? I was advised to...

    Challenge circular saw blades

I have a challenge circular saw bought from Argos a couple of years ago. The diameter of the blade is 185mm. The blade that came with the saw is a 24 teeth blade. I am looking to lift some tongue and groove floorboards and want to get a blade with more teeth for a finer cut so I can cut the...

    Monobloc flexible tap tails??

It turns out it was nothing to do with flexi hoses or o-rings on the tails causing the leak. The ant rotation ring on the underside of the tap wasn't up it the job of keeping any water splashed on the sink top from leaking to the underside of the tap. I bought some plumbers mait and put a good...

    Monobloc flexible tap tails??

I had a go at fixing the leak yesterday evening. I took off the hot feed flexi tail and checked the o-ring for signs of damage. There was non that I could see the ring was intact and didn't appear split or broken. I used PTFE tape at both ends of the connection, although I didn't wet the...
