using 1 way rcd protected mains unit as a rdc protected spur

Its a one way consumer unit being used to function as a fused switch spur to distrubute to the circuit located near by, ie, the pump, and not to many other circuits. It is my beleif that echnically you can place a spur under a bath provided there is restricted access.

using 1 way rcd protected mains unit as a rdc protected spur

I have been asked to install a supply a feed to a water pump which is located underneath a bath. The idea is to feed this using the up-stairs ring which unfortunately isn't rdc protected. I know that rcd protected switched spurs are available, but have unfortunately not been able to get hold...

    earth cable c.s.a

Can somebody tell me why the earthing tail is smaller in c.s.a than the phase and neutral tails (from the main head)? Should they ideally all be the same diameter?

    neutral as an earth

I understand that the regs require this, and its not a question of doing this as an alternative to this requirement - I wouldn't even contemplate it! Its more out a question out of curiosity if any! So assuming the installation had been wired correctly, is there any reason in theory why it...

    neutral as an earth

In PME, neutral is connected to earth. Why can't you use neutral to provide earthing in domestic applications, ie, earthing metal socket boxes with a link to the neutral? Why is there a need for a separate protective circuit?

replacing older consumer units with split load boards

I have just fitted a split load board to replace a unit that is probably about 15 years old (mini trips) for a house that has recently been extended. The new circuits for the extension have been connected to the unit without fault. However, upon adding the existing circuits, the RCD trips when a...

    spur questions

I agree! It was just a hypothetical question. Is there any maximum to the number of sub-circuits you can have originating from a ring?

    spur questions

In this case i am assuming that the arrangement in the garage can now be treated as radial sub-circuit. Can the sub-circuit be made into a ring, so that it originates and ends at the 13amp fused spur?

    spur questions

The reason for the questions is basically this - I have been asked to wire a garage which stands separately from the house. The client does not want to me to put in a new consumer unit and feed it from the unit used for the house - the garage is quite some distance way from the house and would...

    spur questions

can you wire a spur from a spur from a spur? can you wire more than one spur from a single double socket, ie, two spurs directly from a single double socket?

    two way/intermediate lighting

I've tried running though the circuitry for this set-up on paper, and it appears to work in theory - ie, switch line at the intermediate. I've just never seen it done this way in the work place  . I suppose the only way is to give it a go in practice. Thanks for the advice.

    two way/intermediate lighting

The method i have been taught for 2 way/intermediate lighting is to have a switch line (twin and earth) and a length of three core connected to a 2 way switch, then a length of three core to an intermediate switch, and finally a length of three core to a second 2 way switch. Does it matter as to...

    lighting circuits type

I know that there are two main lighting circuit methods - junction box and loop systems. Do you use one or the other in a single circuit, or can you use a combination of the two? What is the common practice? For example, if two rooms had down-lighters and two rooms a central ceiling rose could...

    circuit consumption calculations

Thanks for the advice! As you can probably agree, that as a novice spark as i am (and very keen to learn from the pro's), you want to understand why things are done as they are! I can appreciate that from your years of experience, you know exactly whats is required and involved in certain...

    circuit consumption calculations

This is excellent stuff! Thanks for information lads (no anti-female stuff intented!). This information is really welcomed - i just loath reading those electrical books which don't spell it out in black and white just how to work things out in common sense terms. Where not all einsteins -...

    circuit consumption calculations

thanks for the reply. Was the logic of adding the consumptions for the individual items correct? Why is it that domestic lighting circuits are normally done in 1.5mm on a 6A breaker ,if 1.0mm can handle upto 14a ?

    circuit consumption calculations

This is my first time so be gentle! How do you calculate the demand on an electrical circuit so that you can determine the correct cable size? . I have been asked to cable the lighting circuit to an extension which consists of 2 rooms - bathroom and bedroom. The bathroom will have 3 50w...
