    Securing a steel bath

Thanks Chris for the lightning fast reply! The clamps look like a good idea, but as for the feet, it's not possible to screw them down as there aren't holes in them (they're steel).

    Securing a steel bath

Hi I'm fitting a new steel bath, but need some advice on how best to secure it, i.e. make it less wobbly :) 1. It has *one* welded-on 'lug' on each side (at opposite end from taps), as shown in the first picture here. Assuming these are typically found on steel baths, is the one at the...

    Help installing w/c

Thanks for the advice. Hopefully B&Q will have one of these so I can get it finished this weekend. One other thing, the new cistern doesn't have an overflow outlet, presumably this is incorporated inside the cistern instead?

    Help installing w/c

Hi As (almost) the final part of my bathroom make-over, I'm ready to install the new w/c. However, when I slide the pan's outlet into the rubber seal on the soil pipe, the pan sits out too far from the wall (well actually, it's the cistern that's too far out, but you know what I mean). My...

    New Electric Shower Install

Hi I'm wanting to have a new electric shower installed - there's no shower in that bathroom at the moment. I know I'll need an electrician to run new cable from the consumer unit to the bathroom, but can anyone tell me if the spare socket in this picture will be ok for this purpose? The...

    Earthing A Bath

Thanks JohnD, makes sense now :) One other thing - the old radiator had an earth clamp attached not to the pipe but to the radiator itself. I replaced it with a towel heater, but there in no way of connecting the existing earth clamp to it (and it would look daft!). Is it acceptable to...

    Earthing A Bath

Hi Whilst replacing my bathroom suite, I noticed that the pipes feeding my basin (correctly) have earth bonding, however there doesn't seem to be any earthing on the pipes going to the bath. Is this normal? I can't think of any reason why a bath would be any different from a basin in this...

Help replacing gate valve - more help needed please!

It's ok, the original gate valve was 22mm. I'm pleased to announce that in 2 days I have gone from complete plumbing novice to having: - Drained down open vented system - Replaced broken gate valve (with only one mild moment of panic until I realised I should bung the cold tank) - Moved...

Help replacing gate valve - more help needed please!

Hi Yes, it is the same pipe on both photos and the gate valve is about 6" higher than the top of the cylinder. So if I've understood you correctly, I need to: 1. Turn off the valve from the rising main into the cold tank (done) 2. Turn off the tap (in the loft) on the pipe coming...

Help replacing gate valve - more help needed please!

Hi My water is currently off as I'm doing up my bathroom. While I'm at it, I'm thinking about replacing the broken gate valve in my airing cupboard (I have bought the correct 22mm replacement valve already). However, before I proceed, I'm a bit nervous about it as when I started to...

How long top drain down open system?

Thanks John, the downstairs rads already have these (it is one of these I'm draining the system from). Thankfully, it seems to have stopped trickling, so no for the hard (for me) bits ....

How long top drain down open system?

Hi I'm draining down my open CH system, and have opened the bleed valves upstairs first. I tried opening the downstairs bleeds but there is still a bit of water coming out. The small F+E tank in the loft has had its ballcock tied up. It seems to be taking ages (45 mins so far) - is...

    Removing tile grout

Probably not relevant if you're just removing the grout from the wall behind one broken tile, but if you're removing a larger area of old grout, I find a wallpaper steamer works wonders - the grout just scrapes off easily with a wallpaper scraper.

Installing a mixer shower - advice needed!

Zoltan, no I haven't decided. Too many things to consider at the moment!.......... 1. Install mixer and run the risk of ending up with a dribbling shower 2. Install electric shower, but no power in bathroom so would need new cabling al the way to the consumer units AND a plumber to take...

Turning off water to 1 Radiator - help!

Thanks for all your help. If I flood the place, I'll just say some stranger broke in and did it while i was out :D

Turning off water to 1 Radiator - help!

Now if I knew how to do that (drain down & refill), I'd be sorted!! Isn't it an awful lot of work for just extending a couple of pipes? I'd be scared I'd make an ass of it and flood my house or break something ...aargh! HOWEVER, if I do try that, is the guide...
