    WC building regs

Thanks for that mate. So, since there's no condensation issues, I assume our government want me to use electricity (which we should be conserving you know), to extract the odd fart or two, considering the upstairs loo is the main dumping area?? How bizarre. Who on earth decides on these...

    WC building regs

Hi Guys, Can someone tell me the building regs when converting a downstairs cupboard to a WC? The WC has a small hand basin fitted, but since it's primarily for the kids to use, I didn't fit any hot water. My question is, do I need to fit an extractor fan since there is no window? I always...

Most unusal thing found in a wall

When I was a working as a joiner, many moons ago, myself and my appentice were sent out to a cottage renovation in the north of Scotland. Our job was to rip out the old and install a new kitchen. During the tear down, there was a large floor to ceiling larder unit that had a 1m base unit...

Can loose connections cause appliance failure?

After contacting my meter installer of 30 years ago (SSEB now Scottish Power) and explained that my meters main connections were never tightened, and had resulted lately, in power quality probems, they deny that loose meter connections could cause premature appliance failure. Can anyone...

Helping people kill each other, with Electrical advice

Hey, have a read of my thread, entitled "A Complex problem". If I'm not mistaken, a fully qualified electrician fitted my mains meter and forgot to tighten any of the connections. It's not just amatuers who make mistakes, and I'm sure 99% of the diy guys on here are very much like myself...

    A complex problem?

Thanks guys, I checked, and he did torque the connections up and bare the cables again. there was evidence of burning on the old insulation. He was from Powergen, i asked hm to fit a DP Isolator, but he said we needed permission to do this. I suppose he meant to call Powergen again, and get...

    A complex problem?

Thanks very much for the advice guys. I didn't keep receipts of damaged appliances, as I assumed at the time that I was just unlucky when it came to expensive electrical equipment. I will do as you advise, and file a small claim against Scottish Power. I have gone from being relieved that...

    A complex problem?

Hi dudes, sorry for the late response, but I've been waiting until I got a resolution to this one. Yesterday I lost total power again, and nothing had tripped at the CU. After confirming with the neighbours that they had power, I call Scottish power and reported the outage. I was told that it...

    A complex problem?

Cheers for that, I understand the phase setup now. I've noticed that the flickering is at it's worst during peak times in the area (around 4-7pm) then it seems to settle down again. Our 2kw kettle really affects the frequency and intensity of the flicker during these times. Hopefully the...

    A complex problem?

Thanks mate, I couldn't understand why I could have a power outage, not affecting my neighbours, that didn't involve tripping of the RCD/MCB's. I'll contact my supplier, thanks to all who contributed.

    A complex problem?

The last 3 pages were very much appreciated help and advice, but I had added more information in the hope that you could further help and advise, sorry if it's asking too much. I didn't realise there was a 3 page limit.

    A complex problem?

Ok guys, here's a short summary of events so far.... 1. Lights (both ring main lamps & celling lights) have been flickering intermittently for weeks.. 2. Last week we had a short outage, which didn't affect our neighbours. The outage lasted 2 or 3 minutes, and none of the MCB's tripped...

    A complex problem?

Yes, all of the lights flicker (not constantly, and some times are worse than others, not due to load though). That's why initially, I was thinking more of a supply quality problem. The fact that I had a short outage, that didn't affect my neighbours, and didn't trip any MCB's, made me think it...

    A complex problem?

Well dudes, i checked out the CU connections and all seems fine, no iffy smells or signs of arcing. Lights are still flickering now and again. If it was due to a dodgy appliance, would the MCB trip? At least that way I can narrow it down to a specific circuit. I will monitor the situation and...

    A complex problem?

Thanks very much everyone for your help and advice, I switched off the buggered shower, lights still flicker, so thankfully the wife was wrong... I'l have a look at the CU tomorrow and post the results. Cheers, Paul

    A complex problem?

So, after I've check the CU, I'll be on the blower to the good old Powergen folk.

    A complex problem?

They took out my broadband cable, no problem, but surely the lecky cabling is 10 feet down and wrapped in 6" spring steel conduit?

    A complex problem?

One other thing. My Missus called the supplier, and after explaining the difference between the meter and the CU to the operator, the girl said she would get an engineer to come out and replace our CU..........free of charge...?? Do Powergen employees smoke dope at work, or are they just very...

    A complex problem?

The first thing I did was call the supplier, but they refused to do anything until the internal work had been checked. Our street road was resurfaced lately, but I'm guessing that the supply lines are well away from danger? I nipped down to our subby, and it's humming along nicely...!
