Gulley in the wrong place for downpipe?

Thank you- I'm pretty sure that's what we have. I remember a builder or someone saying something about how I could put an ensuite in at the front or facilities up in the loft as it would be easy enough to connect to the drains at the front, but that was ages ago and I forgot. In short, Yes...

Gulley in the wrong place for downpipe?

Well, I sent off an email to building control yesterday evening and received a call first thing this morning! Obviously, I didn't answer it as 8am on my week off is a bit too early but the nice guy on the voicemail said that if it was a combined drains system- and he thinks that it is around my...

Gulley in the wrong place for downpipe?

Thanks for all responses. I didn't realise there were different drainage systems. I was really worried about having guttering criss-crossing across the front of the extension but I think I have a new problem. I'll have a look at the main guttering on the house and see where it leads to but I...

Gulley in the wrong place for downpipe?

Hi -this is my second issue. I had an extension built a while ago and the builder basically failed to complete the job- leaving me with things like the guttering and drainage to complete for the building certificate. As we had no where for waste from the sink to go this was the first thing...

    No felt in loft space?

Hi- I have two questions for this forum but will post separately. The first: I've been tackling the job of insulating the loft and was considering applying some insulation to the undersides of the roof but it just occured to me that there is no felt and I am looking directly onto the back of...

What do I do with the earth cable on an exterior light?

Due to Christmas overindulgence, bad weather and general laziness, it has taken me a while to be able to post back on this but this weekend I finally managed to get two, working exterior light on the back of the house! So thanks again to all who posted back to me. Nx

What do I do with the earth cable on an exterior light?

Thanks Adam, Steve! I think I know what you mean- the electrician left the wires in what I presume are terminal blocks when he did the cabling for the lights(I'll check in the book!) so I can just leave the earth cable in those. Also, the mounting boxes are quite large and I think there's...

What do I do with the earth cable on an exterior light?

Sorry- I should have said- there isn't one. There's nowhere to connect the earth, it's not shown at all in the diagrams that come with the instructions and it says not to connect it. That's why I am confused, not sure what to do with it inside the light fitting. Do I cut it right off to the sleeve?

What do I do with the earth cable on an exterior light?

I am planning to fit two exterior wall lights. The cabling is already in place (it was done by the electricial when my extension was built) so I'm not attempting to do anything too complicated (I hope!) Looking at the instructions for fiiting the lights, it says that they are double insulated...

Landing and bathroom light switch- Help!

Thanks to anyone who looked at my problem but I managed to sort it out yesterday- I had made a minor error with the terminus I put one wire in (in the downstairs switch) so the light works from both switches now just fine. Also, I didn't realise it made a difference which way round the red...

Landing and bathroom light switch- Help!

Thanks for the reply streetlighter but I'm afraid you will need to use layman's terms with me- i'm not to good on the tecchie language, armed though I am with a collins electrical wiring and lighting book! :) I know which cable in the upstairs switch relates to the bathroom and so the...

Landing and bathroom light switch- Help!

Thanks for looking- I was aware of the black wire in the pic- not the problem! :D There are two green-sleeved earth cable that are coonected to the back of the box, yes. This undoubtedly will sound stupid but how do I 'run a short piece of earth wire from there to the switch earth terminal'...

Landing and bathroom light switch- Help!

Hello- I really need some advice. I have a double switch downstairs that works the hall and landing and one upstairs for the landing and bathroom. I changed the switches for new ones yesterday, took pictures of where the wires went and thought everything was fine (i tried all four...

    Blown render- advice needed, please

I had my extension rendered a few of months ago (end of terrace). The person who did it had done a lot of plastering in my house with no problems but was completely useless with this job- he did the scratch coat(?) during good weather and then failed to show up the next day. When he did come to...

I've messed up wiring a 2 gang switch- help!

I just posted my problem and it brought up a few similar posts (I'd like to say in my defence that I had looked for other similar posts, I'd looked at the sticky and at the how to pages). Having brought up one post that I hadn't looked at, I had a peek and immediately found my answer there...

I've messed up wiring a 2 gang switch- help!

I am trying to replace a two gang switch with a new one. One switch controls the hall light and the second controls the landing light. At the top of the stairs there is another 2 gang switch that also controls the landing light and the bathroom light (I've looked at this one carefully but it is...

Laying a solid wood floor around a granite hearth?

Thanks for the advice regarding the hearth. I know I could do it the other way and glue the grooves but i'd really like to use the adhesive underlay that I have. The room is about 3 metres wide but about 7 and a half long and the boards are going to have to be laid in the direction of the...

Laying a solid wood floor around a granite hearth?

Hi My boyf and I are having a solid fuel fire fitted next week with a split granite hearth. We also have a mountain of solid oak wood flooring that needs to be fitted. The boards are beautiful but a very, very dark stain so I guess proved unpopular and were the offer of the century. Two...
