    1.5 on 16A BS 88 fuses.

Hi, Doing a PIR on a small office that has the lighting circuits (all small runs) wired in 1.5 6242-Y protected by 16A BS 88 fuses. This seems to fall just outside of the max for this cable so I'm looking at a code 4-any thoughts or opinions? Thanks in advance.

    'Open Element' Electric Fires

GaryMo, I agree completely, how can a fixed fire, supplied through a fused connection unit be a portable appliance? It should and will be part of my report however I'm going to code it as a 2. Thanks again.

    'Open Element' Electric Fires

Points taken, the fires are in a school and connected through switched fused connection units. As they are 'attached' to the installation, I feel I have to comment on them. If only the red glow did serve as a warning to school kids-you would not believe what we find in these...

    'Open Element' Electric Fires

Hi All, Is the use of these fires still acceptable? ie the elements behind the front grill are actually exposed live parts. Came across a few on a periodic and I'm leaning towards a code 1-any thoughts??? Thanks in advance.

    PIR Question

So it looks like I was correct as usual! Thanks for the replies! I notice in the 17th Edition the wording for that regulation has changed again-Uo is replaced by the term 'nominal voltage' is 'nominal voltage' U or Uo??? Answers on a postcard.......

    PIR Question

Hi all, Just need to gather a few opinions on interpretation of regulation 514-10-01 My boss insists that I record a code 4 for any 3-phase distribution boards not fitted with a 'DANGER 400V' label. I pointed out that the regulation mentions situations where a higher voltage would not...

    PIR Question

I always code them as a 2 but my boss insists on a code 1. We don't even carry out the remedial works so it doesn't make much sense to me! Slightly off topic but what's the consensus of opinion on rdc's/rcbo's that fail the trip time tests? Code 1 or 2? I go with a code 1, your thoughts?

    PIR Question

Hi guys, on a PIR, should EVERY ground floor socket outlet be rcd protected? If so, would any not protected be a code 1 ? Thanks in advance!

new consumer unit- distance from meter

Our DNO specified 3 metres on a block of 60 flats. They insisted on each set of tails being protected by a local 63A double pole breaker, our XLPE then went from the dp switch to the consumer unit in the flat (up to 60 metres).

    Pic of the week?

They're the supply from a massive UPS system to an 'essential' section board. The panel manufacturers are on site next week to repair/replace so I'll probably get a few more pics of the damage!

    Pic of the week?

Taken this morning, I'm told a spanner had been left on one of the busbars. The singles are 240mm and apparently protected by a 1250A device!! The flash damage extended into 2 adjacent enclosures and the guy that energised it amazingly received nothing but a fright and a ringing in his ears...

    Rubber matting in switchrooms?

Hi guys, What dictates the use of rubber matting on switchroom floors, is it just good practice or is it part of the EAW reg's? Thanks in advance for any answers!

    Lighting circuit without switch?

Thanks for the replies, I spoke with the clients electrical engineer and he argues that the fittings are to be permanently on 24/7 therefore removing the need for a functional switch, also that all factory maintenance is carried out by skilled workers. I see some logic to his reasoning but...

    Lighting circuit without switch?

Came across this on a periodic-5 fluorescent fittings straight from the mcb, no local switching. Although no-doubt this is bad practice, I can't find a specific regulation that it contravenes-any suggestions?

    Testers toolkit-help please?

Hi guys, Great forum here!! Got my 2391 and just passed an interview for a test and inspection job-mostly periodics. Apart from the obvious multi function meter, guidance note 3, reg's and hand tools, are there any other items that I should add to my kit to cover most eventualities-I like...
