Top up loft insulation on top of boarding?

Hi, My loft is partly boarded (nailed down chipboard) and was insulated with a thin layer of glass fibre insulation (beneath boards) many years ago. Is it Ok to top up the insulation by rolling out a new layer straight over the old and the boarding (where present). This will be far easier...

    Mouldy Roof Joists

About a year ago I discovered a white powdery mould growing all over the roof joists/ timbers in my loft. At that time, I thought that it was due to condensation from a shower extractor fan with ducting running through the loft. I located a section of deducting which wasn't joined correctly...

    Limescale in toilet pan

Can anyone recommend a product that will remove limescale stains from below the water line in a toilet pan. I've previously removed all the water and tried i) bleach ii) Caustic soda - both were left overnight and then scrubbed but made very little difference. Someone recommended 'spirit of...

    Painting over wallpaper with border

Isn't removing the border likely to damage the paper underneath and leave a residue of paste to which the paint may not take? I could end up having to strip the whole room and then hang lining paper - something I want to avoid as it will quadruple the time taken to decorate the room.

Steam in bathroom - wrong shower head??

Since changing our conventional boiler to a combi, the bathroom gets so steamy that I can't see more than 2 feet infront of me after using the shower. The shower fitting is a simple mixer tap on the bath and I (think I) changed the shower head to one suitable for all types of shower system...

    Painting over wallpaper with border

I am about to paint over our bedroom wall paper, but there is a paper boarder around the room at about 3ft height. I am concerned that the edges of the border will show through the paint. Does anyone have any tips as to how I can minimise the appearance of the border through the paint? My...

    Balancing or sludge?

Are you recommending that I get the system powerflushed now? One concern - is using an acid descaler likely to cause leaks? (....OK not actually cause them, but as my pipework is probably around 20 years old, there may be some joints which are sealed by scale? I just dread finding the...

    Balancing or sludge?

Thanks Guys. Oilman - yes I have an old system with a new boiler and no I didn't have it powerflushed. I've been reading a lot of negative comments about powerflushing on this forum. The pipework that was replaced was full of solid brown sludge which the engineer said was unlikely to be...

    Balancing or sludge?

Some months ago I had a problem with my heating system - newly installed Vaillant 828 combi would heat up to 80 then immediatly cut out without radiators heating up. Same cycle would then continue. A friend checked the boiler and found that the water was circulating through the diverter...

Replacing 2 gang with 3 gang switch

Thanks, I haven't looked yet but expect to find live and switched live to both lights in the same switch. If I mess up in my 3 gang switch such that the live from one light is matched to the switch live of the other light (and vice versa) will this be dangerous - if so I think I need to get an...

Can I lay laminate on top of carpet?

My laminate instructions state that it cannot be layed on top of carpet. I have a thin carpet on top of a chipboard floor that looks to me like it will to the same job as the polystyrene type roll I've previously used as underlay. Can I go ahead and lay the laminate straight on the carpet?

Replacing 2 gang with 3 gang switch

On my 2 gang switch, one (one way) switch controls both the hall light and the external light. (the other 2 way switch controls the landing light). I want to separate the hall light and external light to two separate switches on my new 3 gang switch plate. How should new 3 gang switch be...
