Dust mask for sanding old oak floor

Hi, I really hope someone here can offer some advice...... My other half and I are renovating an old French farmhouse, and have started sanding the oak floors. The dust is very fine and after a couple of hours using disposable dust masks we were coughing and spluttering, aching and shivering...

Using wall tiles on the floor

Thank you for your replies. Apologies for the direct approach, but I thought it would be better than being 'woolly' when pleading for advice. :) You have raised several issues that I really cannot answer I'm afraid. We moved to France only recently, and my French is still not good enough to...

Using wall tiles on the floor

Right, so now I have removed the old tiles from the oak floorboards in my bathroom, and want to get some new ones. However, I cannot find any floor tiles that are the same colour as the ones I want to use on the walls. The tiles I have just taken up from the floor were 1970's wall tiles...

Removing old tile cement from hardwood floor

Well, I've done about three quarters of it, with much blood, sweat and nearly some tears (I guess there are only so many times one can hit one's thumb with the hammer before despair sets in :)) There is no way I can get it finished before the other half gets back, but at least he will be able to...

Removing old tile cement from hardwood floor

Hi, I have just lifted the 1970's tiles from my bathroom floor. The tiles came up very easily, but I am left with patches of what I can only describe as a cement-type adhesive which I am trying to chisel off the floorboards. As far as I know the floorboards are oak, and the tiles have been...

Richmond Stoves Wok Burner cuts out

Hi again, No, it wasn't. I had a fiddle and found that the nut at the base was loose. Tightened it and it seems to work OK now (fingers crossed). Thank you for your help. :) Chris

Richmond Stoves Wok Burner cuts out

Thanks for your reply macfudd, It is definitely the right gas, and I think the pressure must be OK as the other burners work fine. I have tried it with all sorts of pans, and it just does the same thing. When it cuts out there is a definite 'click' - don't know if this sheds any light on the...

Richmond Stoves Wok Burner cuts out

I have a Richmond Stoves 1100DFT cooker, which was installed about three weeks ago. I have only used the wok burner once, and now it cuts out after about 1 minute of use. Has anyone got any ideas? I know that you will be thinking 'surely it is under warranty', but (sadly) I bought it in the...

    Fridge Freezer overfreezing

I have a Kelvinator KC1 37A fridge freezer and the freezer section keeps icing up far too much. After defrosting within 3 days it has iced so much that the door won't shut. It only seems to have one dial at the top of the whole unit, and this is only set to 1. Can anyone suggest anything?

Fitting replacement wall lights that have two way switches

Right, I think I get it now. Because I was switching on the switch at the bottom of the stairs while there was nothing connected to the three wires for the light half way up the stairs the power wasn't getting through to the light fitting that I had connected at the top of the stairs??? Why...

Fitting replacement wall lights that have two way switches

Hi folks, I'll try to clear up the confusion(s) .......... 1) I am talking about the actual light fittings not the switches (as far as I know the switches work OK!) 2) The first time I tried the wiring I connected as follows Wall normal red wire to a terminal block...

Fitting replacement wall lights that have two way switches

There isn't a ceiling light, only the two wall lights, with a switch at the top of the stairs and one at the bottom. I actually did try wiring the loose sleeve red wire to the earth on the fitting, but it didn't work. Then I was told that as there are two switches (ie two way switching) there...

Fitting replacement wall lights that have two way switches

Hi, I have looked (honestly!) but I can't find the answer to my query anywhere on the site, although it is probably there somewhere! My daughter has asked me to wire new wall lights in her hall. I did not take the old lights down, and the person who did can't remember how the wires went...
