    Short circuit capacity

I used to work on the electricity board and have come across a few of these. Give your electricity supplier a call and they will upgrade it to a 100 amp cut-out free of charge :) Inform them that its very old and brittle.

    Dewalt Carry Cases

Anyone know of a good place to get empty cases for dewalt tools as a few of mine came in just cardboard boxes which arent going to hold together much longer Ideally the plastic moulded strong cases with the metal latches. its for a DW411 palm sander, D28128 angle grinder and a DW365...

Fitting a radiator to an outbuilding.

sounds interesting! just looking into how they work etc (at this silly time in the morning but i do work in music industry lol!) yeah only thing is they aint cheap! they seem to generate 3 units of heat for every unit of electricity (according to wikipedia) so a good invention. I see they...

Fitting a radiator to an outbuilding.

I have a music studio which is a completely separate building to the house. I'm thinking of fitting a radiator in it to replace the electric heaters i have (due to cost of running the things!) but to do that I would have to run the flow/return pipes underground from the house to the studio...

Transformer problems with Low Voltage Lighting

I dont like lighting transformers at all, they have been the cause of a few fires (even though installed correctly and able to handle the load) - often you will find cheap chinese ones supplied with fitting kits. If possible, change your 12v light fittings to 240v GU10 ones and use the...

How bad could it have been?

hmm this is where i managed to clear up where people get mislead by the fact where 'its not the volts that kill, its the current' so i lick my fingers and place both hands across the terminals of a 12v car battery capable of delivering thousands of amps, and nothing happens, dont feel a...

How bad could it have been?

When i was an apprentice on the electricity board, I got pinned to the grounf by 2 jointers whilst we were working on an open feeder pillar in the street (full of live busbars and 600 amp fuses) Well one of the guys touched 1 phase and with his other hand touched my ear, the other guy did...

Kitchen fitting - upright extractor doors

Rixonway emailed me back and said its continued, but they did confirm its the opal range - in mist colour. Even if i get two normal 600mm doors and cut them down a bit it would hardly notice, now I bet theres a skip somewhere with 2 perfectly good doors laying in it lol!

    60A main fuse 100A breaker?

Some people would do the cert and make a note to cover their backs, however I personally would stop work and insist on an upgrade, as those wylex units are not at all tolerant with any excess load whatsoever, they do start to melt quite easily. Last thing you want is a fire on your hands.

    Fault protection (Whats that about)

ahh but if you pee on an earth rod whilst youre installing it, you will get excellent readings which will stay permanent. Chemical reaction with urine/soil makes for very low resistance indeed! Its an old electricity board trick i learnt when i did my electrical fitting apprenticeship...

so who wants to be a domestic electrician?

Domestic stuff is pretty much more stressful nowadays, you get everyone wanting work done yesterday, you feel guilty about quoting them for a job even though youre under-cutting yourself as someone else will always be able to do it cheaper. Dealing with general public can be a pain too, on...

Kitchen fitting - upright extractor doors

    GU10 lamp exploding !!!

That happened to me, i phoned the manufacturer and asked to speak to their quality control dept. Told them what happened and they reimbursed me for carpet damage as a bit of glass melted into it. Had there been any injury then i would have made a satisfactory claim against the company. They...

Kitchen fitting - upright extractor doors

Hi - Just after a quick bit of advice. I'm about to fit two upright extractor units (the integrated ones that sit flush with the cupboards that pull out to use - click for a small pic) to go above the hob, and also above where we put the chip fryer. I need to get two doors for the front of...

    Silly pat test requests... lol

If I was inspecting an installation, and saw that double sockets (that could not handle 13 amp per outlet) were used, then i would fail it and over-rule their specs thus declassifying its BS1363 status. And recommend that better outlets are fitted to reduce fire risk. Reason: the average...
