Thanks for all your idea's chaps, I'll consider them over the w/e. The object is just an abstract sculpture or will be once finished. Cheers.

    Product advice - impression making

Thanks John, I have already tried P of P and found it to be rather weak and ineffective for my needs. I might now try applying plaster directly to my model and see how that works. Cheers.

    Product advice - impression making

Thanks, but isn't latex only going to give me a thin skin, which would be very fluid once released. I would be hoping for a rigid cast of my model. Thanks again.

    Product advice - impression making

I am looking for a product that would coat a plaster-cine model, that I could then carefully cut free, once dry, and leave me with an impression of the plaster-cine model. This might be either a rubber or plastic product. All replies gratefully received. Thanks.

How is it possible to cut, using a band-saw, a straight line through an irregular shaped object? I can lay down a parallel fence to help matters, but my object is very irregular. thanks in advance.

    Auger Bit size?

Silly question I know - but, when an auger bit or a drill of any description is shown as 200mm in size, is that the total length 200mm - or is it only the cutting distance, with an extra distance in addition for chuck holding? making it possibly about 230mm in total? Cheers in advance

Please have a look at my photo and give me your opinion on what you think my ceiling is made from? Forget about the odd colour scheme - I imagine I'm a caveman!

    Ceiling hole!!

This is a great reply - thanks very much. 1. I'm not sure about the building material used on my ceiling, but if it helps to identify it - it has a rather flaky skin and is slightly over 1 inch thick and muddy gray in colour. (the house is 140 years old, although converted into flats 25 years...

    Ceiling hole!!

Thanks for your comment. As I will be doing the work myself and on a tight budget, my original plan would seem to be the easiest and cheapest option.

    Ceiling hole!!

Thanks for your comments - by ceiling cap, all I meant was to forget about filling the hole but to place a lowered ceiling over the hole and make a feature of his element, like a bandage over a wound. Make any sense?

    Ceiling hole!!

I have the top floor flat in an old Victorian house, a ceiling crack which I have lived with quite happily for 20 years has finally made a breakthrough and left me with a hole approx. 20x20cm square. with cracks spreading out a further 50cm in different directions at a point where the pitch of...

    Radiator thermostat not working!

Thanks for your advice. - Is it vital for the boiler to be closed down whilst attempting this? - is removal of TRV(?) head easy? - Did you mean to say screwdriver head, rather than handle? cheers connelsey

    Radiator thermostat not working!

Hi there A couple of my radiators come on when I only want one particular one on. Turning the thermostat around does nothing. So if the thermostats need replacing is this a job for a plumbing novice? And how do I set about this task? thanks in advance connelsey

What works best - dust extraction or filtration?

Thanks for your message. Some of my power tools and my bandsaw don't have a hose at all! Does this fact mean an extractor is out of the question?

What works best - dust extraction or filtration?

I work a great deal with my bandsaw, power files sanders etc.. in my small garage, causing a cloud of dust to appear! What would be the best and indeed, how do the two options of filtration or extraction differ? to eradicate this problem? Thanks in advance

    Is Plaster easy to saw?

Thanks for your replies chaps. I probably will chose to use plaster of paris, does anyone know whether that will respond any differently from ordinary plaster and be difficult to cut? cheers douglas

    Is Plaster easy to saw?

This isn't a building question! - I am hoping to make a sculpture using mostly plaster, I then want to slice the sculpture into several cross-sectional pieces. Is it fairly easy to saw thin (half inch) plaster without it fraying or splitting badly, and would it leave the saw in a poor state...
