    Mira Sport

We have a Mira Sport electric shower (the biggest model I think...the one that dims the lights when switched on). We also have shared water pipes through next door. When they turn their water on, our pressure drops, and if you are in the shower it turns bl**dy red hot in a second i.e...

    Tiling around socket

Thats exactly what I did last night. Really pleased, looks pretty good, a lot better than the other socket someone did several years ago, with the tile cut around the socket. Thanks to everyone for their advice

    Tiling around socket

Cheers Masona, David and Julie - good comments those. By the way, it's not the box shown by Masona, which I understand sits out from the wall, its the one where the aluminium box sits in a recess in the wall, and the switch plates screws into this. Other than that, I think I know what I'm...

    Tiling around socket

Flipping 'eck, that were quick. So, I remove the socket, drill out holes for the mains wire and the screws, fit the tiles, then screw the socket back on. Is that correct? By the way, good comment about turning the mains off!!!!

    Tiling around socket

I'm tiling the mother in laws kitchen!!! Only two tiles left to do, around a double socket (plastic types) on the wall. The socket sits right on the join of both tiles (if that makes sense). Question is, do I: a) cut out a rectangular section of both tiles, so that the socket sits...

    shared water supply

We have a semi detached cottage dating from approx 1850. The water supply is shared, as it comes in through the neighbours house. No problems, but when they run their water, our pressure drops, and our electric shower suddenly goes red -hot. Is it possible for a plumber to re-route the...

    THANKS Kevplumb, BAHCO and Johndug

Big thanks to Kevplumb, BAHCO and Johndug for comments back early January about 'Kettling'. I eventually tracked it down (with their comments) to a faulty pump. I've replaced this (again with gratitude for their comments) and the problem seems to have gone. Cheers.

    Fitting a water pump

Cheers kevplumb. The valves dont have a screwdriver slot, they are machined square on the top of a small (approx 1/4" bar) so it sounds like one you close fully. Really basic question this, but do I use an adjustable spanner for the large nuts on the pump, or is there a special one. Thanks.

    Fitting a water pump

I hope to replace an old Myson Compact CP53 water pump, with a new one (just bought it). Usual old central heating system, primatic cylinder, gas fired boiler, etc. There are 2 isolation valves, one each side of the pump. I would like help with three questions if possible: 1) how do I know...

    Central Heating "Kettling"

I've just tried to do this, but it seems extremely tight. You can't move it by hand, and would need pliers (after pulling off the hexagonal cap or cover). Is this correct, or should it be quite loose. If I did manage to undo the screw, what would I look for. How would I know if it is...

    Central Heating "Kettling"

When we tried bleeding the rads, we did it with the system off, as we thought this was what you're supposed to do. So the pump wasn't on, but only 2 rads failed to bleed properly, out of 6. All the valves were open. It kettles even with all the valves open, so I dont think its the bypass...

    Central Heating "Kettling"

We have a Myson Economist gas fired boiler running a central heating system, with 6 radiators. There is a primatic cylinder in the system. It is all about 15-20 years old, but it's been serviced regularly. It worked well until about 18 months ago, when we had a radiator moved (only a few...

    stains above!!

'Ianm' & 'masona' - nope, I haven't found anything yet, other than the advice from 'masona' below. I think I understand it. I presume that the first primer mentioned, is just used to cover the wood with first. Thats what we need, so I'll try and source some. Many thanks for your advice...

    stains above!!

We have an old tongue and groove ceiling in the kitchen. As its been stained and varnished a dark brown, we want to lighten it up. Someone has said that if we just paint over, even with undercoat first, the varnish/stain will eventually discolour the paint. The wood has a bit of profile, so...

    Brass light switches

We are replacing switches that have white plastic faceplates for ones with brass faceplates. At present the earth wire goes to the metal box in the wall, I'm assuming because you can't earth onto plastic. However, the brass plates have an earth attachment. So, I need to know........... ...

Cheers Breezer. That makes sense now you've pointed it out. You've saved me from looking stupid when I talk to the boiler people. Thanks again. :D
