Why are they playing pubs then, rather than shifting 100 million albums, and being almost revered in some circles?

Serious, non-antagonist question.

As any youngster will tell you, music is free and they don't buy albums.

Some of the less keen ones will pay for downloads.

The days of a hundred million albums, sold first on vinyl, then later sold again on CD (for a hundred times the cost of supply) to the same people, are long gone. So are the days of hifi and speakers the size of fridges.

Mate, for every brilliant band that makes it there are hundreds that don't. You need to be good but you also need to be discovered. If you look at the likes of Cheryl Troll, One direction etc, you can see that actual ability has nowt to do with fame and fortune sometimes. Bear in mind also I was commenting on Princes guitar playing in this video. Not his composing, songwriting and arranging abilities. He was a brilliant songwriter and excellent showman.
