The WB 24 and 28 combis will probably give a very similar, if not identical, output to the central heating.

The main difference will be that the 28kW model will give you a higher hot water flow-rate, so your decision should be based on whether you want, for example, the bath to fill up quicker or a slightly more powerful shower, if it's thermostatic or comes off a bath mixer (ie. not electric)

I've been pleased with my WB 37CDi so far, but I've only had it 6 months so it's still early days yet !

Dont even think about Ideal boilers

Stick with the WB or perhaps look at a Vaillant ecotec Plus 831.

All combis will be too powerful for your rads so the boiler will need to be range rated down.

I suggest you get a quote from British Gas.

What boiler do you currently have, and where does its flue go?

could I simply buy the boiler and flue myself and just get the Corgi plumbers to fit the plumber to effectively save me a lot of cash?

No - whatever you meant to type! A corgi has to fit the boiler, gas, flue and connect the boiler to the wet stuff.

How many floors?

Yeah what I meant was could I buy the materials myself online, and then simply get the plumber to fit them? Surely this would cost less as it would incur no markup from the plumber?

My plumber was happy to do it that way but you may find that many won't be, so you may end up limiting your choice of plumbers willing to take on the job.

I'm surprised that your plumber was (seemingly) marking up the price so much, especially when they know the first thing most people would do is check the price on the internet these days. Most that I've dealt with in the past tend to claim that they can get better discounts than you can yourself, so my advice would be to get some more quotes.

Thoroughly flushing an old system before the new boiler is installed is very important, although whether a powerflush is needed will depend on the state of your system.

Putting TRVs on all the radiators is also sensible, as this will give you more control over your heating. Clearly it makes sense to do this whilst the boiler is being replaced and the system is drained, rather than having to drain the whole system again at some point in the future.

It might be possible for a combi-for-combi swap to be done in a day, if all the pipework is in the right place (and appropriately sized) and an existing flue outlet is going to be used, but if it's a conventional boiler-to-combi conversion (losing a HW cylinder) and pipework has to be altered, hole has to be drilled for a new flue etc, then clearly this is going to add time to the process. One of the pro's on here might be able to give you a rough figure, but only if you can say exactly what else needs doing !

Wb 24 and 28 are below band b, hence not legal to fit, that is why they are cheap
In the range of e.g. 24 there are; i, si, sbi, cdi, junior I and junior si, and probably a couple I forgot, several hundred quid between them.

If you buy the gear cheap, we don’t have to guaranty it, but you will still be hassling us when it turns out you have bought a reconditioned lemon.
Another reason is that we will incur delays because you have bought non matching components and not all that is needed.

And finally, ask yourself this question: if you had a garage, and I came with my car asking you to “just stick these parts in, I don’t want them from you because you are too expensive”, where would you tell me to stick the parts?

If the installer needs to get a certain income for fitting your boiler then he will either get that as part margin on the boiler or as a higher installation charge.

I dont see that you will save anything but just upset those who could be helping you.

You must have a very simple outlook on life if you really expected to save £700 by buying the boiler yourself!
