Hi,

I've been gutting a 1930s house as part of a renovation and on the first floor the interior walls seem to be made up of some dark breeze block type material. Local builders and the surveyor were all expecting plaster and lath construction so a little unsure as to what it is.

As I said, it's like a black aerated block that crumbles fairly easily when raked with the claw from a claw hammer. The blocks seem to be held together with a mortar. Any ideas as to what material it is? Property is in Birmingham if that helps.

I can get a picture tomorrow if needs be,

Cheers,

From your description it sounds suspiciously like clinker block.

Yes, these are the true "breeze" blocks made from clinker ash and cement.

Probably from the old slag from Hams Hall - but I'm not sure where she is living nowadays so can't ask
