1930's Chimneys?.

I've come across this in a 1930's Terrace house.

It appears to be a 5" x 5" void down the side of the chimney.

Any ideas what it's used for?.

It's full of "stuff" at the moment but I'd like to get an idea of what it does while trying to clear it out.

Which floor are you on?

Is it beside a fireplace?

I expect it's the flue for the fireplace on the other floor.
 
Chimneys are full of random voids, just the "unneeded" centre's of bits of supporting brickwork.

We've got an old Vax in our loft, might dig it out and see if I can rig some water waste pipe extensions up see how far it goes!.
