Hello, I’ve been considering converting the two single garage doors to one double for some time now. After some quotes I’m none the wiser as to whether the centre wall separating the doors is load bearing and whether the two sandstone lintels are for decoration or are actually doing a supporting job. Some are telling me that I need a builder involved (which I suspect is true) whilst others say it can simply be taken away.

Any advice appreciated, hopefully the photos load - apologies not the best angles but all I have at the moment

Thanks

Terry

You need to look at what the pillar is doing in context with the lintel arrangement above. The double garage we are building at the moment has a central pier the same as yours and will carry each end of the lintels supporting each door opening.
However, from the internal image it does look as though it may be cosmetic.

The sandstone header feature will just be a décor item, but will still be heavy.

Thanks for the reply, I will need to get someone who knows what they are talking about to take a proper look - hopefully the latter!

I’m going to get a structural engineer to take a look but in the meantime some more photos:

Could be 1 big lintel, could be 2. I think your going to have to expose it on the inside.

Thanks guys, I’ll cut into it at the weekend and see what’s there
