I have a dust extractor thats 3 phase and looking to convert it to single phase. I want to use a digital converter, but don't know where to start. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

kind regards

First you need to advise on its power rating and whether or not the motor can be configured to operate on 3phase-delta connection at 230 volts (ie 6 termination studs inside the terminal box)

In firms I have worked for we had loads of three phase motors working on single phase in the main this was to get variable speed and not because three phase was not available.

As already said in the main motor would be 400 volt start 230 volt delta and it would be used with delta connections. There are inverters which will give out 400 volt but far more expensive.

In all cases it was only the motor running from the inverter to get an inverter to run the whole machine costs a lot more money.

We has all different makes of inverter and each one had something different ABB seemed popular but one job became a real problem as we could not get the inverter and PLC to talk to each other as they should. So we went for SWF motor, gearbox, brake, inverter, and ASi all combined into the same unit. A really cleaver bit of kit.

In some cases the type and make were selected to go inside a cabinet often with large cooling holes and in other cases stand alone with appropriate IP rating. It does make a difference.

So power of motor and voltage of the motor are clearly the first points to consider. Then control voltages some inverters have built in power for control others need external power and if the machine control is already 24 volt DC then clearly better to have an inverter which will also run from the same control voltage.

Inverters are not cheap and it may be swapping motor is a cheaper option.

A bit dated.
