I would never encourage a DIYer to even open up a premix burner. Nor many gas reg people who dont have a gas analyser or know how to use it.
I suppose that I could say that I rather specialise in chemically cleaning HEs in situ and perhaps do one a week. However, doing that needs good experience of chosing the best chemicals and that depends on the composition of the blockage ( which of course you cannot see! ).
Most others prefer to just replace them! Its quicker and less messy!
I prefer to do it myself because I can do it on the same diagnostic visit and all the cost is payable to me rather than mostly for a new part.
Consequently all I would even suggest that a DIYer might do is to try cleaning by injecting the chemicals into the boiler and using the system pump ( or a power flushing pump ).
