Tiling a wall with 300mm sq glass mosaic tiles each sheet; 14no x 14no x 1 inch square individual tiles; using self adhesive plastic backing sheets.
The first tiles are laid onto the starting lower batten that is level. then the next set of tiles onto those using spacers.
The problem is.....because the plastic backing sheets are manufactured about a 1.5 mm less than the size of the mosaic tile sheets; when placing the mosaic onto each other. spacing that gap is awkward because the weight of the mosaic sheet closes the gap and also closes the gap above although the mosaic is fabric backed.
How do you maintain this horizontal space gap; if those backing sheets were exactly the size of the mosaic sheets then spacers would then support the plastic sheet and prevent this sag.
It would of course be useful if these plastic backing sheets were made 2mm larger than the standard sized mosaic 300mm sheet then when you have stuck the sheets onto the mosaic sheets; a block plane could be used to flush them. why has no one thought of this; the manufacturers obviously have not and have not; it seems, tried their products out in reality;
Any ideas apart from doing a few tiles and then letting them dry before the next row otherwise the bottom spacer gaps will be closed and conspicuous.
One other idea would be to cut strips off the back sheet and then place them along flush with the edge of the mosaic tile sheet; long winded job and a lengthy process; for me; make the sheets that little bit more in size and the job is done.
