Do plastic 4-inch sewage pipes just fit together with the tiny single rubber seal. I'm moving a toilet and need to saw into the soil pipe and add a short run. I've bought one of these bends to bring it vertical up through the floor void:

There's just one tiny black rubber seal. Is that all I need to stop my sewage leaking down on to the people below? Doesn't seem that secure, no sealant or adhesive?

I got it on without any lube - is that bad? (sorry to mention lube again...). I did file the end a tiny bit to make it smooth. How about running some silicone round the inside for extra seal?

Also, I've cut the pipe a tiny bit too short - not much just an inch or so.

Do you get a better seal the further into the joint you push the pipe? Or provided the black seal is definitely on, is that all you need? I'd like to pull it back to get that inch back if I can.

without lube you stand a good chance of pushing the rubber out of it's seating which means it isn't sealed anymore, if i were you i would take it apart again & check (if you can now) then grease it & put it back, you don't need any sealant

If you haven't bought the "expensive" silicone lubricant then KY jelly, vaseline or even washing up liquid will do. The seal only acts where it contacts so theoretically, as long as it's "seeing" clean round pipe it will work. However the correct alignment of the pipe depends upon full insertion, otherwise it may end up skewed which will/may affect performance of the seal. If you've cut it short there's only one correct way of rectifying it - swallow your pride and redo it.

Not vaseline or petroleum based lube - London Rubber Co. specifically veto it  Fairy will do at a push - but it`ll make the ring go tight after a while

It's pretty jammed now unfortunately, not sure it's going anywhere. might just try to seal it with silicone and leave it. It's not going to be under any pressure at least. I can't think of any easy way of testing joins in a horizontal soil pipe, because I don't have access to the other end to block it to flood it for a while. There's no easy way I'm missing?

Thanks for all the advice.

thats the other reason it's greased to allow movement or removal, soil stacks are air tested by blocking off both ends & either pumping up or more commonly flushing the loo, underground drains are normally tested by filling with water

It`ll be fine - loads more jammed ones than properly lubed , in existance - it`ll never come apart
