My 17 year old nephew, living 150 miles away, recently had his Kisbee moped stop dead when riding along.

Someone has told him there's no compression but since the young fella has started out on a career in engineering, I've suggested he attempts to repair the engine himself to gain knowledge and experience.

Is anyone in the know with these mopeds? ...... is the engine a good project for the young?

Yes, good project.
Not many tools needed to open them up and plenty of videos online to get a grip on how to proceed.
One thing to remember: do not use a hammer, whatever happens.
Yes to a rubber and wooden carpenter mallet when opening the crankcase and replacing bearings.
Heat gun essential when doing the bearings.
A couple of dedicated extractors will be needed but they cost a few pounds.
Wash engine before dismantling it.
Then wash every single part with petrol.
A large builder's bucket works perfectly for cleaning.
Take lots of pictures at every stage so you know what goes where.
Buy jewellery bags (pack of 100 is a fiver) to store all bolts and nuts separately so you know where they go.
Take your time and all will be fine.
If there's no compression probably you'll need to have the head planed.
Tell him to join a dedicated forum for any questions or come here for more info.
Tell him to enjoy!

These were available as both two and four strokes......two stroke? Dead simple to pop the cylinder head off, four stroke OHV not much more difficult to check for compression.
These engines are pretty highly strung and don't like modified exhausts or being run without an air filter....any clues there?
They also use a vacuum type fuel tap (not all the time though) that fails if the air pipe splits.
John :)

I should have said - a great project to learn!
However, do keep an eye on the spare parts prices - they can be crazy and sometimes an exchange engine is the way to go.
We'd be pleased to get progress updates!
Regards
John:)
