782mm internal fire door

I'm not required to fit fire doors, this is a private residential not letting.

I'm only thinking about fitting a fire door so that it is a like for like replacement.

Do you think I can fit 35mm instead?

What I have in mind, is that if there is not a requirement to have doors conforming to Regulations, you can cut them down by more than the specified 10mm or whatever. So buy the nearest biggest size to your doorway, and cut it down.

I strongly approve of the solidity of the 44mm firedoors, and have them on all my rooms, including bathrooms and WCs. They are very good for muffling noise. You do need the strong hinges (I prefer lift-off).

You might want to add a hardwood strip to the cut edge because IME these doors are made of coarse chipboard, which will be exposed by your cuts. The top of the door has the specification printed on it, which I think is the only reason there is a rule not to trim it.

But Foxholes suggestion might be even easier.

Thank you, I'm guessing that's what the previous owners did and yes, you are right about the doors reducing the noise which is a big advantage.

By adding additional strips, is it likely that you will notice the joins? I'm aware I can get wood fillers, primers and sand down to smooth it out but I'm wondering if I did cut them down or add 10mm additional timber, how noticeable would it be?

Those door stops are enormous! Just fix some strips up each side - you will be able to fill, sand and paint a lot easier than messing with the door. You would have to see how you feel about the architrave becoming a bit further back from the edge.
