well returned to a house today (owned by a friend who rents it out to a family). they had complained of poor downstairs heating, and that the system was loosing pressure. Boiler was a Glowworm 30sxi. anyway, had previously discovered that the expansion vessel had failed, so i was going to fit an external 12ltr one, and do some work on the system itself. he had said to me that the installer had not found anything wrong when he came round!
pressure vessel fitted, PRV replaced, and all rads downstairs flushed out. no drain valves anywhere so a number of them put in the system. when i had a good look at the heat exchanger i could see that there was evidence of spillage. burner removed. (by the way, did not like the way the gas is connected via that securing clip and o ring!) the burner seal was the old style and not graphite. a third of it was missing, and the oval seal at the bottom was missing all together. burner was filthy obviously due to combustion problems. an absolute death trap. and this was from a 'friend' who said that it was serviced regularly and was all in good order. god knows what would have happened if i had not checked that. in addition and to add salt to the wound, the condensate drains to the trap on this boiler just disintergrated in my hand. had to drive 12 miles to get a replacement which had been modified to make removal easier. Crap boiler. But a reminder to me to be vigilant, and not to beleive a word anyone says to me.
