I’ve just removed a metal socket backbox.

Looks OK, right?

Nope:

Do boxes often have backless earth terminals like that? I don’t think I’ve seen it before. It wouldn’t be a problem if the earth wire were not sleeved.

Wouldn't the brick be in the way of pushing the wire through like that?

Oh, I've never see one like that before must be quite old.

But I think you would realise if you pushed it through that far, well most people would anyway

Yeah this format was quite common at one time, 'e made I larrrrf :ROFLMAO:

To me it looks almost fine.

Does it not look okay because the socket doesn’t have at least one fixed lug?

Or does it not look okay because some people think it’s always necessary to run an earth wire to the backbox?

Well - it probably wouldn’t be a problem if the earth wire was/is still remained sleeved.

Good point. In this case some of the connections to the box are in steel conduit. I believe that in this case relying on the screws is not allowed, right?

(More fundamentally, I think it’s clear that whoever installed it didn’t intend for it to be like that!)

My thought is it looks like that may have been correctly terminated at some point by the way the copper is bent
Alsothe way the insulation is damaged at the end but that could also have been done with pliers during the folding process;

Yes; this socket has quite a lot of "history", i.e. it has had two (!) spurs connected at different times, not by me! It has also received a mangling while removing it from the wall, followed by some unmangling for the photo.
