It only takes one bad experience to wreck it for the genuine ones. In many cases, the bad ones can get away with it because the customer knows even less than they do.
Yes, I've had the experience that many must have had, when the supervisors never got around to telling the new lad that the correct tightness is not when the ratchet starts clicking at full load. I was lucky in that I needed to loosen the wheel for something else - obviously I could have been somewhere dangerous or expensive when I needed to make the change.
A friend had an engine seize the day after a main-dealer service. Unfortunately she has no mechanical nous so never checked ( or had anyone check ) for a missing sump-plug/oil-filter or similar likely cause.
