I decided to re-site a radiator in our living room as the original radiator was obscured by the settee.

I re-routed the pipework, fitted new radiator and thermostatic valve, and was well pleased with my handy work. My DIY pal popped in for a coffee and I proudly showed him my work. He looked more closely and said 'you've got the return and flow mixed up'! The pipe leading to the thermostatic valve was warm (the valve was fully open) whilst the other pipe was really hot.

I carefully lifted the floorboards again and showed him how I extended the pipework. He agreed that I'd followed the original pipework to the letter but the original installation must have been incorrect?

Can someone please tell me how will this effect my heating and system  ?

Kind regards

as i understand it it doesnt matter unless you have a trv , which you have.

some trvs only work one way, the newer ones dont mind,

see if your trv has an arrow on it, this arrow should be pointing in the direction of water flow

If you put TRVs on the "wrong" way, it usually doesn't matter, especially with more modern ones. Some of them make a noise when they are almost closed - this is usually as they are closing themselves or opening themselves, and they are almost exactly at the pre-set temperature. This is caused by the water pressure pushing on the narrow gap.
