Add interest to hipped roof

I have a bungalow with a hipped roof that is situated side on to the road. The loft height is 1.6m at its highest point, so zero chance of an affordable loft conversion. I'd like to add some interest to the roof by either vaulting part of it and adding roof windows that form a mini dormer on the outside (flood the kitchen and living room with light). Or fit a porch with a ridged roof that joins onto the house roof. Because its side on, and lacks any apex, it looks a bit wierd.

What could be done that would offer some practical use but at the same time give some interest to the shape. I'm able to do most of the work myself.

Ideas and advice welcome.

Got some photos and a crude plan (estate agents will be fine)? Is the kitchen at the front or the back?
